#Paleo. Certfication Bill
2 messages in this thread
Thiis is to notify everyone in the dinosaur Forum about a Bill going for the
state legislature in Utah. I was asked to write a letter in support of the Bill
and I thought others in the forum might as well. It is:
HB-52 submitted by Representitive Tom Mathews
on
Paleontological Certification of Volunteers
Basically this Bill requests $20,000 from the legislature in support of
Paleontological training programs organized by the Utah Friends of Paleontology
UFOP. These funds will be used pay for equipment and to bring in outside
instructors to train voluteers in vertebrate paleo. excavation, preparation and
curation. As there are very few professional paleontologists in Utah, a strong
volunteer program has proved essential in developing Utah's vast
paleontological potential.
Write letters of support to;

Please pass this information along to all interested parties.

While on vacation, my girlfriend (the Utah Friends of Paleontology
secretary — UFOP being the group through which the bill's program would be
run) and I attended the committee session which passed the bill into the Utah
state House — but only barely! Five members of the committee voted against
it; six, and it wouldn't have made it to the house floor! One of those against
the bill was a powerful and influential politican in the state, so this bill
needs all the support you can give!
The bill was actually scheduled to go onto the floor last Monday, but
Tom Matthews requested a postponement so the UFOP could lobby some more! Now's
_YOUR_ chance to make a difference in the future of some paleontologically
important areas! Please do write!
