Mesh & Project Browser?
22 messages in this thread
Hi to all.
Is there a way to browse through all of the meshes and projects
and view their thumbnails? I know there is one in the ipas section
but the demo ver. doesn't show a thumbnail so I don't know how they look like,
and I don't know If it shows Project (.prj) files also..
With Thanks
Sus.
Hi SUS,
If you find one, please notify me, preferably one which works outside 3ds so
you could use it with Norton Commander or else…..
Thanks
Michael
I'm coming in on this a bit late, but the Autodesk Multimedia Partner Catalog
lists a Plug-In that is called Thumbview File Browser. The literature states
that a demo version is available.

Note to ADESK: The Partner Catalog has an inconsistancy of referring to "IPAS"
programs under the heading of "Plug-Ins". While technically they are one and
the same, a case could be made that the use of synonyms in reference material
is confusing.

It's in a transition right now. IPAS should really be called IPASBK but who can
say that :-). So we've started to call them Plug-Ins but IPAS still has
customer recognition so…..
Actually, the correct pronounciation of the acronym is BIPKASM.
(Ooops… that was a secret. 🙂

!
Are you sure it's not BISKMAP? <BG>

BIPKASM… now that I can relate to ;-P
I understand. I just thought it might be confusing to some folks. But then,
if they're smart enough to operate 3DS, they're smart enough to know that an
IPAS is a Plug-In.

Well, I had a look on this "browser" – well my opinion of a browser is more
than a *third* of a 640x 480 window for viewing files. – More like 800 x 600
full screen with only one narrow line for buttons or so….<g>
Anyway, thanks for the info…
Michael
Hi Michael, SUS,
I recently came across a little utility called lviewer (came with a disk with
the Creating Virtual Worlds Using REND386 book). It doesn't create thumbnails
of mesh files, but it does allow you to view DXF/3DS in DOS without having to
fire up 3DS, it also much faster than 3DS.
Regards
Kevin.
Gee, thats *exactly* what I'm looking for !
Is there any "about" or programmer info, or if you could remember the company I
would be very thankful.
Thanks for now,
Michael
Hi Michael,
The details I have are as follows :-
RenderStart Technology BV. 92-94
Release Date : Jan 21 1994 (486-N-4GW).
The Book details are as follows :-
"Playing God" by Bernie Roehl, Waite Group Press, ISBN 1-878739-62-X
I suggest you contact The Waite Group direct, they may be able to give you more
details.
If you get really stuck I don't mind sending you a copy on disk, the only
problem is I live in the UK, so it would be a few days wait before it arrived
(by boat !!).
Regards
Kevin.
Kevin,
Thanks for your kind offer.
If it's not too big, you could send it to me by E-Mail and reverse the charges.
Thanks
Michael
<<…it also much faster than 3DS.>>
To load the file maybe but if you want to do a rotation or zoom in then 3DS is
MUCH faster. Yeh, this is a good little utility that I found with LPARSER3
which is an interesting and powerful way of creating everything from trees to
insects with small "growth" instructions.

David,
Yes the lparser is great fun, though it's not the most friendly system i've
ever
used. Do you know of anywhere that has good collection of example files for the
lparser, iv'e exhausted the ones that came with it.
Also using the random facility to generate 3-5 copies of an oobject and then
using these as morph objects can be alot of fun.
Regards
Kevin.

I can't say I've really tried to do much with it but it appears to be very
powerful. I plan on reading the article about LPARSERS in the SIGGRAPH
conference notes someday.
<<Do you know of anywhere that has good collection of example files for the

Unfortunately no.
<<Also using the random facility to generate 3-5 copies of an oobject and then

I looked at the objects generated by the program such as the spider and then
tried to replicate it in 3DS. I found that using Hierarchy Dup Links allowed me
to create very similar objects in no time at all.

Hi David "1000 faces" Gould <g>,
Is this 'little utility' by any chance freeware, shareware or else.
I'm starving for a mesh browser, don't need to rotate it at all.
Thanks
Michael

It is freeware.
<<I'm starving for a mesh browser, don't need to rotate it at all.>>
It loads the 3DS file and displays it in wireframe. It can load it pretty
quickly though. You might want to search for LPARSER3.ZIP in one of the POV
forums since it is most often used with this program.
David "1001 faces without swapping to disk" Gould
I can't find it anywhere !
Would you mind E-mailing it to me with reversed charges if its not too big ?
I assume you've got it <g>.
Thanks
Michael

I've been having problems uploading files. As soon as WinCIM support help me
out I'll send it to you. Do you want only lviewer.exe which is used to view the
3DS files or the whole lparser package?
David "Sum is greater than the parts" Gould
Gee, thanks, if its free, why not uploading the whole package to the forum for
the benefit of all, so even your upload time is suspended… ?
(when you fixed your troubles, of course)
