I have Kodak's demo disc from their stand-alone PhotoCD player (the ones
intended to connect to a television, meaning no computer required)… if I
put it in my NEC 84 under OS/2, it locks the machine.
If I put that disc in my Texel under OS/2, I am able to get a directory of
the files on the Photo-CD. My conclusion: MY NEC84 V1.0 doesn't support
PhotoCD, single or multi-session. I have been told that the Texel supports
only single-session, but I don't really have any disc or software to cofirm
this…

Stephen,
When you have setup your Texel CD-ROM drive to read Photo CD discs, you
will be able to open the image files on the demo Photo CD disc that came
packed with your Photo CD player.
You might want to call the Kodak Information Center (KIC): 800-242-2424,
ext. 53. They will tell you if your Texel drive is compatible, and if so,
what drivers, etc., you need to get it to work fully with Photo CD images.
You can purchase a Windows program called Kodak Photo CD Access from Kodak
directly for $39.95. (We don't have an OS/2 version out yet. However,
Mathematica just announced a DOS image editing program that opens Photo CD
images – called Tempra Access Software.)
If you want the Kodak program, you can call KIC at 800-242-2424, ext. 53.

Paul– FYI:
Stephen didn't mention which model Texel he was using, however, the Texel
DM3024/5024 (internal/external versions) are single session compatible. A
$20 upgrade is forthcoming in the next few weeks which will make it fully
multisession compatible.

Exactly right, the Texel 5024 has passed all our testing for single
session on the PC. This test was using the interface card and driver
software provided with the drive (Trantor T128 and Ver 1.46d driver) The
NEC 84 has some particular problems. I would suggest contacting NEC for the
exact solution for making this drive single session compatible.

Hi- I've had a roll of film done up on photo-cd by a local lab in Quebec
City. I have the following equipment – A Future Domain/Panasonic Drive(part
of the Corel "bundle") – A Corel SCSI/NEC CDR-77 – All attempts using Corel
Mosaic which offers a photo-cd option fail because the drive dosen't
recognize the format – says the drive door is open. I was going to rush out
and buy a NEC CDR-74(ext 84). I need to get this working for a demo next
week – What options beyond jumping do I have? We want use this medium for
capturing stock photos for DTP and slides. But darn it, nothing works – it
is hard to hit a moving standard! I need major help —-please. Comments
I've read say that single session will work with older drives – is this an
option that the lab might understand? or are all photo-cds multi-session?

You probably don't have the right device drivers and CONFIG.SYS setup.
We are closed today due to Thanksgiving holiday. You could try to call our
Kodak offices in the Toronto area today, ~or, on Monday, you can call Kodak
in Rochester, New York, at 716-724-4000. Ask the operator to connect you
with the technical service department in the Kodak Information Center for
help with configuring your CD-ROM drive to use Photo CD discs.
Also, I have forwarded your message to Paul Wisotzke, who works in that
area. His CIS ID is 70007,6237.

Actually, we announced it in September 1990. Some of the CD-ROM drive
manufacturers just didn't take us that seriously.

The lab that transfers your images has no control over this. Your drive's
ability to read a Photo CD disc, whether single or multi session, depends
(with a DOS system) on the drive/device driver/controller card, and the
setup of your CONFIG.SYS file.
For a single session disc, simply ask the lab to put all of your images on
the disc in one session, and don't take the disc back to have more images
made. Have a new disc made for each set of new images.
(On a Mac system, it is simply a matter of having a compatible drive and
current device drivers, eg. AppleCD SC+ or AppleCD 150 for single session,
or AppleCD 300 for multi session.)

No. Any Photo CD disc that is written to one time is a single session
disc. You can put up to 100 images on the disc in that one writing.

If your drive is Photo CD-compatible at all, it will read the first session
of even a multi session Photo CD disc.
Your problem right now is not multi vs single session. It is the
configuration of your system. Corel in Canada also may be able to help
you.

Thanks for the info – I'll let you know what comes of this. I suspect that
my "existing" drives are the problem. I have the Toshiba drive that came
with Corel and an older NEC CDR-77. I think this is going to cost me a lot
more money. Anyway, I'll get back to you with how this resolved itself –
tks for ur efforts.
