#Which CD-ROM?

I am a GRASP developer – although the stuff I do is at the other end of the
Multimedia spectrum, i.e. I do EGA demos using the PC-speaker for digitized
sound — but — I finally have to breakdown and get a CDROM drive because
so much stuff (Animator Pro, Corel Draw, sound bytes etc..) is now only
available on CDROM. Rather than make my usual mistakes, I thought I go to
the experts — which CDROM should I get —
I have an SBPro and I know they have an upgrade kit that would save me a
VERY valuable slot; also I have an HP ScanJet IIc with a SCSI interface,
can that be shared by a CDROM — I'd Love to not use a slot unless
absolutely necessary —

I would recommend a SCSI CD-ROM drive for long term benefits. These
benefits include multi-platform capability and usually (98%) better
performance than proprietary PC-bus type of drives.
Since you are doing GRASP development you might wish to consider Kodak
PhotoCD multi-session capability too.
yes — I just learned about the Kodak multi-session XA from the info
on this forum — yes I agree — now— which do I get — and how to handle
the interface — should I get an Adaptec type SCSI — so I can run my
scanner and CDROM off one interface?
(btw — when I called Creative Labs -their current CDROM is 390ms -and they
have no plans for a mult-session unit)

The Adaptec is good due to the fact that is widely supported as the defacto
standard for SCSI host adapters. There are other good host adapters as
well but when it comes to supporting everything Adaptec seems to be doing a
good job. (GO COREL) has software for the host adapter in addition to
Adaptec.
The Toshiba is one that seems to be more widely available than the other
units. Its multi-session, PhotoCD, CD-ROM/XA and SCSI-2.

the toshiba seems to get high marks! now I need to talk to adaptec or
corel to see if I can run both my HP IIc and CDROM off the same SCSI. (I
just read the scanner manual and HP says that it doesn't support the
product with someone else's SCSI and their SCSI cannot support a "daisy
chained" device)

I read somewhere that HP was going to be using Adaptec cards for their tape
backup devices in the future. It seems like that is still you best bet to
go with the Adaptec.
I'd recommend an Ultrastor SCSI HA. I've been using one for a year, and
its performance(and the company's support) is much better then Adaptec!
They are also compatible with Adaptec's ASPI standard.

Bad news. That IIc SCSI does not support daisy chaining, and HP
doesn't support putting the IIc on anybody else's SCSI card. It's either
the Soundblaster or or the slot<g>.

yup, 'fraid you're right — boy this forum was great — in 2 days I got way
up to speed on XA. multisession, SCSI-2 and PhotoCD — so much so that I am
now helping my friends over in the Graphics Vendors' forum — GRASP section
— also — kudos to those that have those wonderful and informative txt
files in the libraries —
