Our company is looking to purchase a new CDROM drive… It *MUST* be photo CD compatible…. And it must work equally well with standard CDROMS (I know some drivers require parameters etc for the driver to work in XA mode etc etc etc). Its main use will be on a mac (ci or quardra 950) but if possible I would like a scsi based drive that will also work on a PC (although I don't need a PC interface for it now). I have heard that toshiba and NEC make drives… Anyone have any advice? Anyone using such a drive? What kind of price range am I looking at? Joe Flanagan A&a Printers

Toshiba does make a Photo-Cd compatible model, and so does Sony (also marketed under the Apple label – peel? – Sorry!). Double check on the NEC's to be sure they are new or have upgrades available. Best – Rich Bowers

As you search, you might want to call the Kodak Information Center (KIC). We test drives for Photo CD compatiblity, and provide the names of drives that pass the test, along with configurations to use those drives on Macs and PCs. Call KIC at: 800-242-2424, ext. 53. You should be able to buy a multi-session Photo CD-compatible Mac drive for a street price of around $400 – $500 by early next year. This would be from Sony or Toshiba. Although NEC advertises Photo CD compatibility, I have seen messages from lots of people struggling to make their NEC drives work with Photo CD. Check with KIC before you purchase. Regards … Paul

Paul, I called the KIC and received some pretty good help from the guys. I asked if they could provide a FAX of reviewed drives and controller cards, which they weren't able to supply. Would be really neat if you could get a copy of this information and post to the library. Can you pull any strings? – Mike –

I have forwarded your idea to KIC management. They are working on doing this. This holdup is that the list has to be updated weekly, since we are constantly testing and confirming new drive/driver/controller card/CONFIG.SYS combinations (for DOS), or new drives (for Mac). Regards … Paul

Thanks for the info. Without your comments I probably would have bought a drive that was marginal with regards to Photo-CD. Appreciate the help – Mike –

Thanks for the reply. I'll contact the KIC…. Do you have a preference of the sony or toshiba drives? Joe Flanagan A&a Printers

> … sony or toshiba … I've used the current Toshiba drive and it works great. However, I believe the new Sony drives will be double speed, so if you can wait, that might be a better choice. KIC can give you a more technical comparison. Regards … Paul
