Out of curiosity, is your Gateway/ATI UltraPro a local bus version. I'm
using a 2Meg local bus version of the UltraPro. It was a real pain to not
have Animator Pro quit or reboot. 3DS tends to reboot playing a .flc. I
understand they have had problems with drivers in systems with more than
8Meg of RAM. My personal coding experiments with its VESA driver seem to
have no problem in 256 color modes 0x100 through 0x105. Some software
tends to behave erratically with it (DOS 5 Edit, but it's flaky anyway.).
I've also had some problems go away after rerunning QEMM's Optimize. I
tend to think it's all related to Memory Aperture.

Sure is. Unfortunately. I bought it as a word processing/email machine,
so I haven't even used 3DS or AAP on it. I've seen a lot of bugs in the
ATI windows driver at 1024×768, so I'm not optimistic about it being able
to do ANYTHING very well. I almost sent the system back, and still might.
The damn power supply fan is incredibly loud as well. Awww…

Oh well… ATI does keep updating the drivers though. New ones, (BETA
aargh), keep appearing on their BBS, and here on Compuserve. They've added
true color support (hope you have the 68875 RAMDAC). I've encountered no
bugs in Windows other than with a virtual desktop at the higher
resolutions. Still, it's pretty zippy (Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln…)

I've been following the discussions in their forum here on CIS, but their
beta drivers don't seem to have solved the problems yet. It _is_ a fast
card, for sure.

>> memory aperature
Yes, you CANNOT have memory aperature on if you have >= 16MB of RAM in your
system.
>> viewing high res flics in 3DS with ATI
By running the VVESA.COM file provided with the ATI, I can now run and view
the hi-res FLC's …. but now the low res FLI's cause my system to REBOOT!.
I swear … I can't even buy a break.

Yep, I know what you mean. I use a batch file to run 3DS with the line
"VVESA off". One thing puzzles me, I'm assuming the memory aperture is for
sfotware that wants to use 32bit flat model addressing. Does the ISA
version also have a memory aperture? AT cards tend not to be addressable
past 16meg.

>>ISA past 16MB
Dan,
Exactly, and that's why the ATI's CAN'T have memory aperature set if your
system has => 16MB (actually, I think its because the card max's out at
2MB).
