#VT100 emulation HELP!

Does anyone know how to properly setup my terminal software to use as a
VT100 terminal? The main question I need an answer to is how to duplicate
the PGUP PDDOWN CLEAR ENTER (not RETURN) and other PF keys. I need these
keys in order to modem to my companies E-Mail system and such.
For instance, I can call my company on the modem with an IBM machine and
software, and the standard IBM keyboard includes the above keys, which are
recognized by the other end. The Amiga keyboard does not include those
keys, and they are critical to using the E-Mail system.
I can use either Online! or ATalkIII software. I select the VT100 emulator
mode, and can connect. Online! (at least) allows me to redefine keycodes,
so I gather that if I knew what the keycodes were I could redefine some
keys to be the PGUP PGDOWN CLEAR ENTER F3 F4 F5 F6 F7 F8 F9 F10 and ENTER
keys. Does anyone know what actual codes are sent over the modem when I
enter these keys on the IBM machine?

For logging on to a mainframe as a VT100, I'd definitely recommend that
you consider either VLT or VLTJR (avail in the libs here I believe). I use
VLTJR Version 5.517 daily to log onto a VAX/VMS system and have found it to
be most satisfactory!!

Bob, thanks, I went and Dl VLTJR and it seems to work much better. I'm
still confused about what keys do what functions, but if I can find a VT100
keyboard map I should be able to figure it out. I'll look at work
tomorrow.
Thanks for the advice. Not that I'm thrilled, but at least now I can EMail
tween home and work!

As you have probably discovered, (on a 2000-like keyboard) 'NumL' or
'(' on the keypad is the 'GOLD' key, 'ScrL' or ')' is 'Page', and the rest
pretty much correspond to the VT-100 keypad labels (<– when connected to
VAX/VMS anyway). There are some I still haven't found (not having the VLT
manual) like:
Next Screen
Prev Screen
etc.
With the XPR libs for file transfers and VLTPhone.rexx (as
customized to suit me), I use VLTJr exclusively for my non-CI$
communications! The only minor complaint is that it doesn't work perfectly
with Khalid's FR Bypass and excellent requestor. This is apparently due to
the use of undocumented features of the ASL calls (like in multiple select
for sure) by VLT (BTW this applies to the rexxarplib requestor calls too).

What you can do is go in and reprogram the 6 rightmost screen gadgets to
emulate those keys. You can also go into VLT itself and change the names
that appear on those gadgets. Mine reads FND INS REM on the top line and
SEL PRV NXT on the lower line. Then you will be close to a functioning
VT220. Unfortunately, there's still no "Do" Key, but you can reprogram one
of the other screen gadgets to do that.
I also use VLT to access a VAX/VMS system almost daily and have things
pretty much down to a science.

Thanks for the reply. I'd forgotten about the screen gadgets since I
normally run with them off on a custom, non-interlaced, 24 line, 80 column
display. I've needed PRV and NXT so seldom that I've been too lazy to
customize VLTJr. Maybe now. 🙂

I would recommend to you either "HandShake" or the registered copy of
Jr-Comm v1.02. Both are *excellent* vt100 emulators. I used both on VMS
machines had at excellent luck.
VMS is *very* demanding of vt100 terminal emulators.

Mark, I DL'ed VLTjr from the libs here tonight and tried it. Seems to work
ok, so I'll keep trying it for awhile longer. If I find any real problems
I'll keep Jr-Comm in mind. I've always heard good things about it.
Have always heard good things about VLT too. Am looking forward to getting
some macros running on it that will automate some of the EMail I'm doing
between work and home. It would be nice to have a sort of WHAP/AutoPilot
for it, where I wouldn't need to stay online to read all my messages,
etc…. ttfn
