Experimenting with ICONEDIT I have really mucked-up! I don't know what
I have done, but quite a few of the Draw icons in my Systems window
have changed. When in normal mode, the icon is blank, when in select
it shows a Tool icon, where it should be a Draw. A case and point is
the New Drawer icon. When I click on this the NewDraw is a Tool icon
instead of a Draw. The magnified window in the Editor shows blank
when in Normal mode.
Also, when I click on a different TYPE icon and then click on NEW,
when in the Editor, the icon in the Select mode stays as a Tool mode,
can't get it to change
I do hope I've made myself clear, but I just can't figure out what to do
next, Help please!!!
Nancy
Nancy,
Check the files in this drawer, they each start with def_
Shell 1> DIR SYS:PREFS/Env-Archive/Sys/def_#?
def_disk.info def_drawer.info
def_kick.info def_project.info
def_tool.info
If you've altered these files then your DEFAULT icons will appear in
ICONEDIT as altered, you can replace them from your master disk set of WB
disks. Or you can use a copy of an icon that is correct and name it as you
see above for each type of icon. Copy them back into your
SYS:PREFS/Env-Archive/Sys/ sub-directory.
When you "…click on a different TYPE icon and then click on NEW, when in
the Editor, the icon in the Select mode stays as a Tool mode, can't get it
to change."
Do you get a requester telling you that Untitled hasn't been saved, and
asking you to select [Start New], [SAVE then Start New] or [Cancel]? That
is what happens when I tried it, selecting start new brings up the newly
selected default icon. If you loaded the default icons and altered them,
then saved them, you may have changed the default icons. Of course just
selecting Save may only create an icon named Untitled in sys:tools.
Christopher
Thank you Christopher for your prompt response, it is appreciated. I have
managed to just about straighten out the mess I got in to, just a couple
of things I would still like to ask.
DEF_DISK and DEF_KICK are missing (what is the DEF_KICK for?) I have tried
to replace the DEF_DISK. I set up a new draw in the SYS window, named it
DEF_DISK, went to ICONEDIT, and saved the .info file of that name and
TYPE. However, the file and icon does not appear inthe SYS window, but,
the file does appear in the SYS directory listing!
Secondly, you mention using my WB Master disks to replace icons, however,
the ENV-ARCHIVE/SYS in the Master Disk only has the WBConfigprogs file. I
can't find the DEF files in any of the floppies. Where are they?
Anyway, thanks again for your help, couldn't have got straight without
it.
Nancy
My mistake, there aren't any DEF_icons on the master disks. They're
created using ICONEDIT and the Project menu item, Saving AS DEFAULT
ICON.
OK, here is why DEF_Disk and DEF_Kick are missing. They were installed
on my system by MagicWB. These were special icons made to look great
with an 8-color Workbench. I believe the default icons for these are
in the ROM, I could be wrong but the ones installed in Prefs/Sys may
override the ones in the ROM.
To fix your default icons load any icon that is correctly drawn as
you would have it, then select Save AS DEFAULT ICON from the Project
Menu of IconEdit. It will automatically save a DEF_icon to your
Env-Archive directory in Sys:Prefs. If you have a Trashcan and/or a
Disk icon you like, load it into IconEdit and save it as the Default
icon. Christopher
OK Christopher…I shall be very wary of making icon changes in the
future, I really did mess things up!
Thanks
Nancy
Nancy,
Hi! Chris is right about DEF_Kick. That's an icon that's stored in
the ROM chip and can't be changed. However, there is a shareware
program called MagicWB that included a DEF_Kick icon to replace the
one in ROM and MagicWB will use that one instead of the one in ROM.
If you don't have MagicWB, you don't have the DEF_Kick icon and you
don't need it.
Also, any disk icons will not be displayed on the WB screen. They
will only be displayed when they are copied to a floppy or hard drive
partition and named Disk.info. That's why you can see a directory
listing for a disk icon, but not see the icon displayed on the WB.
That's normal behavior.
I think the DEF_Kick Icon is pretty useless anyhow, because it is
only displayed, when you insert a A1000 Kickstart Disk into any
drive, but this disk is never required on any other Amiga (at least
that what I think).
A word on MagicWB: This is just a collection of Icons, MagicWB is no
program that uses other default Icons, but it places new default
Icons into envarc:sys and env:sys, which are always used instead of
the Icons in the ROM, if they are present. Just clarifying.
MC >>I think the DEF_Kick Icon is pretty useless anyhow, because it is

I'm not sure, but I was under the impression that the DEF_Kick icon was
also used for "unformatted" disks & NDOS disks.
I use MagicWB. It consists of icons, four new fonts, a WB
background, and prefs palette.
Thanks Dom…I downloaded MagicWB quite a while ago, but I haven't
installed it because I can't stand the interlace flicker = shame really!
I agree with you. I've had a flickerFixer for some time now, but
before that, I wouldn't use any program that required hi-res, because
I couldn't stomach the flicker either. So if you don't have a FF, you
shouldn't use MagicWB. However, if you ever get a FF and appropriate
monitor, then MagicWB is highly recommended.

Nancy,
the def_KICK file is for when a user inserts a Kickstart disk (a disk
with the system ROM on it) in the system. Given that many people don't
use Kickstart anymore, it's not very useful today.
As for finding the def_#? files, if you look in the MagicWB directory,
you'll notice that there is a subdirectory named XEN-ICONS. In this,
you'll find a subdirectory called PREFS. In this drawer you'll find a
drawer called ENV-ARCHIVE. In this drawer, you'll find the drawer SYS.
Finally, within this drawer, you'll find the default icons that MagicWB
loaded to your Env-Archive drawer in Prefs.
Quite a bit of subdrawers to go through to find the def-#? icons, but
they are there if you ever need to restore them. If a drawer does not
show up, you will need to use the Window menu and select Show and All
Files to get them to appear.
In your case, you need to copy those files, DEF_DISK and DEF_KICK to
your ENV-ARCHIVE/SYS drawer. Simply open the comprable drawer
(MagicWB/Xen-Icons/Prefs/Env-Archive/Sys and copy to the equivalent, i.e.
Sys:Prefs/Env-Archive/Sys.
I hope this helps.

Actually I found the def_#? files in the Prefs/env-archive/Sys drawer of
my Systems partition.(I couldn't find them in my master disks, with good
reason, because there aren't any.) Are you saying therefore, that the
reason I why had them in my Systems partition is because I at one time
tried to install MagicWB?
Nancy
Nancy,
that is how I ended up with these files. MagicWB inserted a few in my
envarc:sys directory. I've since added quite a few of my own. If you
didn't know to delete those files, they may still be around.
MagicWB does that in quite a few places. Perhaps I should go through
and figure out exactly what the script does to write an Uninstall script.

Sorry Brian, but I am intrigued who and what is the above address
that appears on your messages???? Hope I am not being nosy:-)
Nancy,
I believe that's Brian's Internet address.

that's my internet address at UC Riverside. Since I spend more
time there then at home, I thought I'd put it in my tag line.
Sorry about the late reply, but midterms intervened.
