FYI, At the risk of stating the obvious I thought I'd note for anyone
who is going to purchase a Fax/Modem that the Supra 144LC DOES NOT
work with the Supra GPFax software.
The modem uses Class 1 software and GPFax is Class 2. I discovered
this after purchasing the 144LC (which I bought specifically because
of the Supra s/w) and spending time on long distance trying to get
hold of Supra Amiga Tech. Supra is not expecting to upgrade the
software so you have to either forgo fax capabilities or go with a
competing product (I went with the GVC V.32). Apparently the older
and more expensive Supra V.32 will also work but I decided not to buy
another Supra.
Anyway, I now have it working so I'm happy. 8^) The GPFax Software
is pretty good although it doesn't seem to recognized formfeeds when
printing from an application.

I have heard tell that there is a Class 1 version of GPFax software
available for the Supra 144LC from the folks that wrote GPFax.
I hope your decision not to purchase a SUPRA is NOT because you are angry
with Supra. The LC works just fine, especially on the MAC which is what I
think they were aiming at with the LC line. Your dealer should have
steered you better when you purchased your LC.

I called Supra and they said there was no Class 1 software available or
planned. It's possible that they weren't aware of the other version.
My decision not to go with Supra was two fold: I was grumpy about having
to return the LC because their own software didn't support it and also the
V.32 Fax/Modem wasn't available at the store were I made the purchase. I
had purchased the s/w & modem separately because the h/w store doesn't
support the Amiga although the Amiga dealer said the s/w would work with
any fax/modem.
The LC worked fine on my system with my telecom s/w and I have to admit
that the documentation was much better than what came with my GVC. I also
liked the small footprint of the LC but my primary reason for buying it
was the Fax so it was unsatisfactory for me. I've had several GVCs in the
past so hopefully it will serve me well in the future.
What is the best fax software on the Mac?

Check with GPFax manufacturer in Australia, not SUPRA for the Class 1
software (although now it probably is not important). I don't know what
the "best" software for the Mac is, but FAXstf from STF Technologies, Inc.
(816) 463-2021 VOX and (816) 463-7958 FAX.

I figured Supra would know about the new Australian version because it is
the same software by the same people. I wonder if I would be able to
upgrade having purchased the Supra Version?? Hmmm. Anyway, as you point
out it isn't important anymore.
I'm not in the market (yet) for a Mac package but I wanted to be aware of
what is available. Thanks for the info.

Supra makes fine modems, but they are a Rockwell house like the many other
hundred manufacturers. GVC uses the Rockwell datapump but there own
controller technology. Supra has done some nifty things with Rockwell's
firmware code to get caller id, silent answer, etc…
The best fax software is really the only fax software. That is GPFax.
There are three different versions currently. Class 2, Class 1, and a
special Class 2 version made for Supra.
The best fax software on the MAC market is the _NEW_ Delrina Fax PRO for
the Mac. Of course, since I work for Delrina, I may be biased.. 🙂
Seriously though, it is much better than STF…. in fact, they closed down
there tech support! How do you like that! Anyway, Delrina has used it's
80% Windows fax software dominanance and technology edge to capitalize on
the MAC market. It is an awesome product with more to come!

If there are three versions of GPFax do you know why Supra doesn't make it
available for the LC fax/modem? When I spoke with them they said nothing
was available and nothing was planned.
Thanks for the info on Delrina Fax PRO. I'll keep it in mind when the
time comes. BTW, how would GPFax compare to it. Should I feel jealous?

I also have a 144LC, *and* GPFax software (for Class One). I think it is
the generic version for class 1 fax. It seems to work just fine so far.

Did you get it directly from Australia? My dealer said the version I have
is the only one that was available (but then he also thought it worked
with all fax/modems.)

Yes, any version other than the Supra version, can only be had directly
from GPSoft in Australia. If you want prices or availability I would
contact Dr. Greg Perry by Internet mail. The address is
"gregp@gpsoft.asdp.sub.org". Althouth I have had better results sending
them to Richard Carde.
Supra is only licensed to sell the Supra only version which is sold with
their Amiga bundle. The LC unit is not, and will not, be bundled for the
Amiga probably because they would have to license different software.

Well, I'll keep it in mind if I ever have to buy another fax/modem.
I am quite content now that I have it working and I understand why
the Supra version doesn't support the LC. It seems, actually, that
the version 2 devices are more versatile, at least the 2 s/w offers
more choices.
I just d/led the GPFax upgrade patch and GPSoft has a special offer
to allow one to switch to different versions. Currently there are
several versions available. I wish Supra had known that when I called
them up and I wouldn't have complained as I did. Thank you for your

Yes, I know what you mean about Supra. Since they have become a much
larger corporation then they started out to be, their help is not as
multi-platform literate as we would like them. Now when you even
mention an Amiga you hear their mouths drop open and they think to
themselves "could this be some new expansion board for PC's".

Unfortunately I fear that is the way of the future. One has to be very
dedicated to be an Amiga user in todays market. But, if you follow a
different drummer you have to expect no one else will hear the beat. 8^)

Not quite, I'm British you see and I got it from a company called First
Chioce Computer Centre of Leeds. Cost me about 50 ukp, ?70 dollars.

another type. I believe there are four different versions available.
I was grumpy before because I had already purchased the s/w & modem and I
didn't want to have to buy a completely different product, again. Luckily
I was able to exchange the Supra LC for another type which does work.
