Max AGA Display res?!?

Here's a weird 4000/AGA question:
I just re-installed a VGA monitor on my A4000, and I now seem to be
limited to a 672×480 viewable display in the Workbench.
I thought I was able to go to at least 724×480 when I used this monitor
before…….
All I did was use a 1084 monitor, and run in NTSC mode for a few weeks.
I've tried editing Overscan prefs, and even went so far as to delete some
of the appropriate prefs files from ENVARC:sys. Nothing seems to get rid
of the one inch border on the left of my screen, nor allows me to have a
viewable display of greater than 672 pixels…
Any suggestions?

Which video mode are you using?
Sounds like you don't have the VGAOnly driver in the devs/drivers drawer.
And, possibly, you have an older version of the monitor drivers…

Currently, I'm using the DblNTSC (v39.29) and VGAOnly (v39.1) drivers on
my 4000/040. (These are the same drivers I was using about 3 months ago,
when this same VGA monitor was hooked up to it.)
When running Overscan prefs, the max size is listed as 676×467 for
DblNTSC. Std NTSC shows a maximum size of 724×241…..now if only I could
get that to run in interlace – I could swear that I used to run in 724×480
mode!
BTW, is DoubleX the best mode promotor?

The maxsize for DblNTSC is 720×467 on my 1200…
You said you deleted your screemode prefs and overscan prefs in your
original message didn't you?
My monitor drivers are V40.4 so maybe you might want to update to the
new drivers. (They definitely work better) I believe they are freely
distributable, as I've seen them on other services and BBS's. The name
of the file is 1942setup.lha
I swear by ForceMonitor for mode promoting. (You can configure some
screens and programs to not promote. It'll also promote to any mode.)
I _thought_ I should be able to go upto 720×467!
I only deleted the Overscan.pref and Screenmode.pref files from ENVARC:
_after_ detecting the problem with limited display resolution. They were
promptly recreated the next time I ran both of those Pref utilities.
Now, the only things I'm modifying are the Overscan and ScreenMode prefs.
Maybe I'm not setting some other prefs options correctly?
The curious thing is that I _used_ to be able to go up to 720×467 – even
with the older video drivers. (The only change made to the system was
running a Toaster on it for a couple of months. I didn't touch the system
software – short of setting up for NTSC mode & removing DoubleX. [Maybe
the Emplant installer did something?])
I'll try to find the new monitor drivers. Thanks for mentioning them.

Another thing you might try, is to go into the screenmode prefs program,
and select "reset to defaults" from the menus, then save the prefs. Then
go back and set them to your liking…

Just checked…..'Reset to Defaults' just set it to NTSC:HighRes (visible
size 640×200)….
Now to find those monitor drivers……..

Which version do you have now?? I have a v39 set that has helped
several people, I don't know if there is a newer version set and big C=
never alerts anyone about updates..
Overscan v39.5
VGAONLY v39.2
Multiscan v39.14
NTSC v39.6
DBLNTSC v39.32
If anyone has a newer set please let me know..

No, it is not here. CATS has not released it for electronic
distribution.
Make sure the multisync monitor is moved from Sys:Storage/Monitors to
Devs:Monitors. You should then be able to use, among other screen modes,
Super72 SuperHiRes Interlace — 800×600 without overscan.

Well, maybe not. :^(
I added the Multiscan driver to Monitors, and that gave me a maximum res
of 640×495 in overscan prefs…..Adding the Super72 driver gave me a
maximum res of 448×314. (BTW, this is a cheap Samsung VGA monitor, not
capable of Super 72 sync rates.)
Hmmph! I wish I hadn't tossed the old configuration away. :^(

(BTW, you don't know anything about the mods req'd to get the C= VGA
dongle to work with the Toaster, do you?)

I have an A3000 running 2.04 with a C= 1950 monitor. Can I run Super72?

Yes, but only in 4 colors, and you'll have to upgrade to 3.0+ (I don't
think it is in 2.1). Unfortunately, I don't think a 3.0 enhancer kit is
available yet.

Yeah, after trying a number of other ways I tried deleting both
Overscan.prefs & Screenmode.prefs from ENVARC:. They were recreated the
next time I ran the programs, and nothing appeared to have changed
otherwise.
Again, the weird thing is I was able to get a higher visible res. when I
first turned it on. Something I did during the Toaster installation must
have robbed me of my overscan capabilities. (I promise I'll take notes
next time! :^)

Well, I thought it was always said, that those Dbl Modes could not display
the same overscan as the normal interlaced modes (a friend of mine keeps
telling me this, it was one of the reasons he bought an '040 accelerator
board an not an A4000)
