Howdy –
I'm on the lookout for a friend – she has an A2000HD – NO memory
to speak of, and I'm helping her decide what to do – I was looking
for a $400 CBM 2630 with 4M- they seem to be gone. The cheap A3000's
seem to be gone, and Creative Computers now have the "2000 HDA" FOR
$650 With the 2630, 100M HD,4M 32bit etc.
My friend wants to do some PageStream, Final Copy stuff – is the
2Meg of chip ram necessary?
She wants to spend the least amount of money possible – I have the
opportunity to buy 6Meg of 16bit ram with board for 150- but that
wouldn't help PagesS or FC (would be slow, right?) (I know FC is way
too slow- and she could live with WordPerfect – what about
PageStream?)
Any suggestions would be most helpfull. Thanks in Advance

Mike, she could buy my A2000 memory board – 8 megs of DMA fast RAM. I'd sell
it for $150, I think.

For less than $150, your friend could get a SupraTurbo 28
accelerator. It is a 68HC000 processor clocked at 28 MHz and
high-speed static RAM cache. The standard Amiga 2000 clock speed is
7.16 MHz. Coupled with the 6 Megs of RAM for $150, she should have
no problem with PageStream, Final Copy or Wordperfect.
I am using a SupraTurbo 28 in my 2000 with 2 Megs of expansion RAM
(total 3 Megs RAM) and it moves along at a pretty good pace although
it is not as fast as a 68030/40 accelerator with 2 Megs or more of 32
bit RAM.
Wait, does she want to do PgS or Final Copy? Big difference. Doing
simple word processing is much less resource-intensive than doing
desk-top publishing. If she's just doing word processing, doesn't
need graphics (which is what really slows down FC) and has limited
money, the 6 megs of RAM for $150 (along with a little patience)
sounds like an acceptable solution.
If she is reall wanting DTP, get a new A2500 ($650) or A3000 ($800)
unless you can find a used 2630 or A3000 for an appropriate price.
The A3000, of course, adds 2meg chip RAM, de-interlacer, 4-color
Super-72 (800×600 interlaced) and productivity mode, all of which
make it seem easily worth the extra money.
Before she really jumps, you should consider which operating system
she's going to run. If she's going to stay with version 1.3, all is
O.K. I've been running on various versions of 2.0 since it came out,
and find that Word Perfect, (even after it's upgrade), is a little
flaky. And she will most certainly require the second meg of chip
RAM if she's going to use a desktop publishing program — structured
fonts are rather profligate users of RAM.
