Complete waste of time… The CD32 is more or less a 1200 without
keyboard, floppy drive, or rodent. I expect that C= will eventually
release a keyboard/mouse/floppy/hard drive combo for the CD32.

Yeah, but, the CD32 does have the CD-ROM. Now, anyone know whether the
CD32's CD is SCSI (probably but…). If so, could one void their CD32's
warranty, and open it up and hook up the SCSI bus of their Ax000 and share
the CD-ROM (as many a thread has mentioned sharing between Amigas and
PCs)?

Nice idea. Unfortunatly, although SCSI, the CD32's use a non standard
interface. The other major problem is the AKIKO chip and the lack of the
3.1 ROM…. The latest Amiga Format (December issue) had a news clip
stating that the drives for the 1200 & 4000 are now finished and SHOULD be
out before christmas. The 1200 CD ROM drive is set at 269 quid. The 4000's
drive price was not released.

On the CD32 SCSI sharing. Non-standard interface, bummer. Oh well. I
still want one but, I also want a CD-ROM for my 2000. I guess the new
drive for the 1200 & 4000 won't work? Too many differences. I guess
I'll need to get a standard SCSI CD ROM for my 2000 AND a CD32.
I hope I'm not being too much of an 'ugly american' but, I can't
remember how to convert your 269 quid for the CD ROM/1200 to US $. So
I don't have a clue what the price is.
Lets see 269 quid in US dollars…. well converting it to Hong Kong
Dollars first (since I'm in HK) that would be approx HK$3100 which
would equate to about US$390…..I would take this figure with a
pinch of salt though as this is taking into account two different
exchange rates. I think you will find the price to be something like
US$300 or less.
As for the CD ROM drive for the 2000 then yes you are going to need to
buy another one. Which is exactly what I did. I have a Texel 5024
hooked up externally to my 3000T and have my CD32 sat under my TV in
the main room.
That does sound like quite a contorted exchange rate. I'll think
I'll probably do something like your setup. CD32 in the living room
and another CD on the 2000 but, maybe, just maybe, I should get a
1200 and a CD for it and PARNet the 1200 and 2000 together… If
it's about $300 US for a 1200 CD…Hmmmm…just hmmming…
Yeah going through several exchange rates certainly doesn't help….
whilst the HK -> US$ rate is good (it's pegged to a fixed rate) the HK
-> UKP is not so good :^(
To give you an example I just bought Final Writer from the US and the
cost was US$112 which worlks out at HK$873. Whereas the price in the
UK is 115 pounds, which works out to HK$1357 !!
What I have noticed though in looking through the various magazines
is that the price in US$ is Approx the same as the UK cost in Pounds
as per the above example US$112 v UKP 115.
So taking this into account you might find the drive for the 1200 to
be about US$260.
Gives you something else to Hmmmmmm over ;^)
P.S. It's great having the CD32 hooked up to a large TV through the
S-Video….. plus I have it all hooked up through a rather large
sound system 😉 (I feel SO sorry for the people next door).

Ah those people next door will get by! We're going to get ourselves
one of those excessive TVs for Christmas. I can't wait! Now, if I can
just convince my girlfriend (and her 14 old year son!!!!! w/SNES) to
think we NEEEEEED a CD32, I'll be set! (I have a pretty decent sound
system too! ah poor neighbors–NOT)
Another Euromag quoted Lew Eggebrecht, I believe, to the effect that
Workbench 3.1 would contain a CD32 device driver. By implication the
comment went on to suggest that it would work with third-party CD-ROM
drives. Whether they would be fully compatible is anyone's guess, but
they can be SCSI drives.
Now, if we could just nail down this 3.1 thing, that might give us a
start. Just rumours that I've seen so far. I haven't bothered with
BIX for a long time but, from what I've seen here that probably
wouldn't shed any light either. Of course, with a 2000, I've got a
long way to go with CD32 compatability issues!
Well from what I read in previous reports in magazines, 3.1 will be
released at the same time as the CD ROM drives for the 1200 & 4000.
Thing is anyone wanting to use the drives are going to need the new
ROMS, and as those drives are now actually finished (and due for
release soon) then one can assume that the 3.1 update will also be
quite soon.
I've only been reading AW lately. If something has been in there the last
couple issues I must've just missed it. Thanks for the info. New ROMs
again…so for 'all' Amigas?

It's much cheaper to use a proprietary CDROM interface. This explains
why the PC market has $200 CDROM drives. Instead of more complicated,
more flexible SCSI, they use a high-speed parallel interface that
doesn't require as sophisticated glue logic for managing a full-blown
bus. They consume a PC card slot instead.
Well, all the CD ROMs we have at work are true SCSI but, a proprietary
interface does have it's place in bringing a price down. Not the most
versatile or gracefull but…
