#Scrolling too quickly
25 messages in this thread
I have to second that. I'm getting "postage due scrolled messages" in my
e-mail after just 15 hours!!!!! That's absurd. I know the traffic on this
forum is intense, but there's got to be a better way.

Just have OzCIS setup to call automatically every 6 hours and
download everything! That's what I have been doing in the past 18
months.
Did you download the new OZ-CIS yet? 2.0b(2) is the latest version,
works great! Even better than version 1, which I thought was
fantastic!

…. yeah, like you don't know me…. <g> I got it the day Steve put it up
here….
Maybe I'll give OzCis a try.
Thanks,
John
If the message is not headered with the phrase "This message scrolled
from the Autodesk Software forum", you are receiving replies from
messages that scrolled to someone else. That would explain the 15
hour turn around too.
It did say it was scrolled from Autodesk forum. It was dated 10:24pm
Saturday, and I recieved it in my mailbox Sunday @ noon. Is it
possible that a reply to a reply to a message (no, that's not a
typo… <g>) already scrolled would automatically end up in my
mailbox with that header on it?
Yes!!! In fact if the initial recipient is on the basic plan the
subject of the message will have *Postage Due* Message scrolled from
??????? forum. If the message actually did scroll from the forum, the
scroll announcement should also be in the message (first line)
itself.
Joe:
Yes, something is wrong here!
I logged off Thursday at 4:00pm to go to Sausalito, and logged back on Sunday
at noon with two ASOFT postage due messages!
What can we do to keep the scroll rate more realistic? Aside from not
posting as many messages? <g> Does it work by number of messages, or
total size? Can we increase either enough to get a one-week scroll
rate, which should be reasonable?
Greg,
We presently have 547 messages on the board. This will vary according to the
type of traffic we have. Reasons are that the message board software was
changed this last year and the way message slots are calculated and used was
changed. We presently have about 750 message slots, but the new slot is used
differently than the old slot.
The first (or earliest) message on the board uses four slots. One for the
sender, second for the recipient, third for the subject and the fourth for the
message itself. The first reply to this message (provided that it's between the
same two people) only uses one other slot, and that's for the reply itself. If
a third member were to reply to this original message, that reply would use two
slots. One for the new name and one for the message. What this all boils down
to is that everyone involved in the message board has one message slot for his
(or her) name. Each thread had a message slot for the subject and finally each
message itself also occupies one message slot. Are you confused yet ????? If
not, follow along…….<grin>.
To further confuse everything there are two files that make up the message
base. The first is the index file that contains the header (message number,
date, subject, sender and recipient). It also contains a pointer to a specific
location within the second file. This is the file that you see when you do a
Quick Scan of the board. The second file is the message file itself and
contains the body of each message. When you do a READ of the message board, the
CIS computers combine the first and second files in the proper order to give
you the complete message that you see on the screen.
The new software (it's also the software that has increased the message size
from 2600 characters to 10,000 characters) also handles the scrolls to MAIL
much better than the older stuff. As a result, we don't have to do a scrub of
the message board so often. (lots of forums have completely eliminated message
board scrubs). But when a message scrolls to mail, two things happen. The CIS
software creates a new index file for the mailed message and inserts the
"Message scrolled from the Autodesk Software forum" into the subject section of
the index. If the recipient is on the basic plan, the MAIL software will
prepend "+postage due+" to this subject line. But most importantly, the forum
software will also add the line "The following message was scrolled to you from
the Autodesk Software forum" (or some such words…cause I can't remember the
exact wording right now) to the body of the message too.
If you don't see this line, or something similar to it at the beginning of the
body of the message, you haven't received a "Scrolled to MAIL" message. If all
you get is the scroll announcement in the index subject line, what you have is
a reply from a message that was scrolled to someone else. What normally happens
is that you respond to a message on the forum. The person you have responded to
doesn't pick up his messages and your response scrolls to mail for him. He does
pick it up there because he's alerted to the fact that he has mail waiting (and
some of the automated programs will get any waiting mail as part of the
program). He reads the response you had posted on the message board here AND HE
REPLIES. But he's now replying in MAIL, and his reply will contain the subject
of the message which is the scroll announcement in the index.
One thing this thread had done however, JP and I reviewed the message slot and
usage of the board this morning. We presently have about a 4.5 day scroll here
on ASOFT. Since we're permitted a mininum of a 7 day scroll, JP has requested
additional message slots for this board.
Joe:
Talk about getting more than you bargained for! I now know more about how
CompuServe works than my own office accounting system! (anyone know of any
good MAS-90 tech support out there?<g>)
Glad to know it is encouraging people to look into increasing the message slots
available, a seven-day scroll rate would be great!
Greg Pyros
Greg,
We've always kept track of the size of the message base here and the scroll
rate. But lately this forum has taken off like a rocket. Yesterday there were
over 200 messages posted. At that rate the scroll is down to 2.5+ days. There
has been some increase in the traffic in the Educational sections, but not that
much. You guys just caught us off guard, and just when we thought we had a
handle on things…….<g>.
Joe:
>> You guys just caught us off guard…
Don't blame us! All the blame rightly goes to the Yost Group for coming out
with Release 3, and everyone writing to thank them for it! <g>
That pretty much coincides with the increase in traffic, doesn't it?
Greg Pyros
Heeheeheehee…
Yes it does Greg. And the message slots were kicked up to 1500 yesterday, so we
should have some room to grow a bit again.
Joe:
Great! Good job, all of you!
Greg Pyros
Joe, thanks for the excellent description of the scrolling. I notice that
we've upped our slot number.
Great!
Yep!!
And the forum message count went from 547 to 904 in a day and a half.
I wonder if you are planning to split the forum again in the near
future. I yearn for the good old days when downloading the full 4.5
days' worth took about 10 minutes. Could it soon be time to split
into "3DS Hardware" and "3DS Software?"
A lot of the messages here are hardware-related, which I am for the
most part not interested in. I am much more interested in software
questions and discussions. Choosing subjects to download doesn't
work so well because the subject often changes after two or three
messages while the thread continues to grow.
Any thoughts on this?
Michele,
In the "Real" Good Old Days, this was all on a single forum called the ADESK
forum. Was that one crammed……………….<g>.
There are some solutions in the works for the existing forum cram, and we're
just going to have to be patient until we see which one's are going to be
available. And I can't say anything further than that.
I try to keep all the hardware messages in section 6, but I ain't been doing
such a good job of catching them in time.
Yes, I was here in the real good old days. I kind of miss the weird
sideways wit of the AutoCAD guys. I think after a while all those
unconnected polylines get tangled up around their heads, which makes
for interesting humor. Understood. I know you've got a big job and
I don't envy you.
>>I think after a while all those unconnected polylines get tangled up around

I know what you mean. I've been up on the AutoCAD forum for the last 2 weeks
checking out the threads about AutoCAD LT among others. The atmosphere there is
different. So is the sense of humor. If you think the OS/2 thread is nasty on
this forum, check out the LT thread over in ACAD. I'd swear, if those guys
weren't seperated by phone lines, they would kill each other. <g>
Glad to be back on this forum. It is much friendlier. <g>
Yann
Yann,
>> Glad to be back on this forum. It is much friendlier. <g> <<
Just what the h___ does that mean! <BG>
Jus' Sand-baggin' Ya' Yann….Hope you had a good Thanksgiving.
Murph'
Joe,
I'll add my vote to split hardware and software.
Fred
I think I'm with you on the division by hardware and software. Some
other logical division would be OK, but I'm not changing hardware all
that often and am, by far, most interested on software discusions.
FWIW
I second (third?) the software / hardware split of some kind.
