Jon, I've tried Image Alchemy with both the hp 650c and Encad
NovaJet. Although the output was great, i ran into a problem of
running out of memory. Alchemy comes with both a regular DOS app,
and a 386 app. i would consistantly run out of memory if i tried to
do anything larger than 30×24". i have 32mb of memory which would
let me get about 80% complete.
What is this Alchemy driver? We are considering a Pain(t)jet XL300 or
a Deskjet 1200C, but have yet to find a fast way of printing TGA's.
We are stuck with loading Windows, then Photoshop, then wait, wait,
while Photoshop processes, then wait, wait, while our demo Paintjet
XL 300 prints… It also looks like we might have a 650 on the
network sometime soon.
I am certain that we want some form of ink-jet printer for small
stuff, but really don't know how to get output at a decent speed. My
recently deceased Tektronix ink-jet came with a Targa file output
utility that used EMS and really got the images out fast. Cannon
has a new series of "dumb" ink-jets that have higher resolution than
the HP's. I wonder if a "dumb" printer might be a faster way of
printing raster images than a PCL page printer… Any thoughts?
Image Alchemy is from Handmade Software. You can reach them at
1-800-358-3588. It works well, except for the memory problems. In
addition to printing it woill convert most graphic formats into any
other format. i've used PhotoStyler for much the same purpose you've
used PhotoShop and have found that i have to continually increase the
brightness of the image being printed. With Alchemy, the image
usually comes out closer to the screen brightness. It still will
create an inter- mediate file that you have to send to the printer
(plan on a long coffee break). Alchemy does have a 60 day money back
guarentee.
If you could find a printer that takes either direct TIFF or TARGA
files, it should definetly speed things up. We had a 3M
printer/plotter in here for a while that would directly take TIFF &
CALS and print a 3mb file out in about 2 minutes.
