#Object color creation

Whenever I try to change the default color by clicking on the "white
Box" between the hold and fetch buttons in the 3D Editor, the Object
Color Creation dialog box does not show 64 color buttons. Does anyone
know what is the problem or how to fix it?
I am using VGA as the option for my main display, could that be
causing the problem?
Hi Judy,
from what I have read and experienced with this, if you are running
the 3d editor in a VGA , like 640 x 480, the color panel will not
work. You must run the 3d editor in a 256 color mode minimum.
In real "VGA", 640 x 480 is a 16 color mode.

That answers my question. I have to run in 1024×768 to get the color box to
work. I thought that perhaps the VGA meant 320x200x256.

Larry's got the answer for you. You need at least 256 colors in your
main display to use the object colors. I recommend you reread
"Setting the Main Display" on page 67 of the I.G.
Re the problem of no colors: to fix the problem, go back to the DOS
prompt and type 3DS VIBCFG. Use the TAB key to move to the MAIN
DISPLAY setting. You will be given a bunch of choices, like 640×480
16 colors, 800×600 256 colors, etc. Make sure that whatever you
choose, it has 256 colors. When you exit the config program you will
go into 3D Studio. You should be able to see the colors now.
I had thought that VGA meant 320x200x256. I have to use 1024x768x256
until I get a fix for XGA-2. I really don't like to run at
1024x768x256 because of the font size, but I have no choice.
By the way I say where you had been making a zebra mesh. I am
working on a horse mesh. I am doing each part separately –I even did
the ears separately. Did you model your head and neck separately?
Also where did you find the zebra skin? I would like to find horse
hair someplace.

How is it going on that horse mesh? Can be kink of tricky huh? Anyway I
can now tell you more about the pigs I modeled. The animation is part of
3DPC, a set of 3D animations for a cool Windows screen saver package. It
has just been released this week. The pigs have wings and defy the saying
"When Pigs Fly"

You are right it is kind of tricky. I discovered that I have to model almost
every part separately — head, neck, ears, chest etc. etc.
I do have one question — how did you handle the eyes and the nostrils ? Did
you just use a bitmap or did you make them part of the mesh? What did you do
for skin?

What resolution is this project to be in? I was able to use simple
spheres as eyes and the pigs nostrils were booleened from the head
mesh. I took two spheres, elongated them, positioned them, and did a
subtraction booleen. Worked great. The skin was colored in the ME
and a slight bump map was created for added texture.
The resolution will be 320x200x256 — but the horse will be seen from
different view etc. I am wondering what to do about the mane etc. Do
a free hand draw and then loft it using a short path and then attach
it to the neck? Hmmmm.
The mane can be approached two ways:
Beauteous solution: Loft the freehand path, then make several copies
of the hair, bending and scaling to get a varied effect. Try to make
the hairs have a small number of segments for fastest rendering. By
small I mean 3-5.
El Cheapo Solution: Draw a picture of the mane and use it as a texture
map on a plate stuck into the horse's neck where the mane is. You'd
have to make a matching opacity map for it.
Thanks for the tip. I am working on the chest now. I need to have this horse
run and jump. I was thinking of making a small cel from a bitmapped picture of
a human head and using that hair.

Why use human hair? Does the horse need to be photorealistic? If
not, you might want to just draw the hair in a paint package. If it
does need to be realistic, you might consider finding a photo of a
horse and scanning its mane.
Judy – PMJI You'll probably see tiling if you just take a square cel.
I have made some fairly successful tilable maps by clipping a square,
rotating 45 degrees, copying upper left of cel to outside the lower
right and tweaking the lower right portion to blend with the copied
upper left, then repeating for the other 3 sides. I'm not sure if my
description makes sense, but it seems to work and, IMO, is a little
less obtrusive than if the same thing is done to a square (unrotated)
cel. FWIW…
