Well I wasn't pulling figures out of the air. I talked to the folks at DPS
just the other day … and the math goes like this.
The highest quality video (greater that S-VHS) is at between 2.5-3MB/sec. Only
about 300 MB of the 540MB IDE can perform at these levels. Therefore you have
either between 120-100 sec's of animation (1.5-2 min).
As I said … I think that the PAR is going to be a great solution for
_most_ (but not all) 3DS users… but not for the broadcast video
person … who would probably benefit from the other feature of the
IllPro … like charater generation .. having a real frame buffer …
etc. I think there will be a place for both products. For the
architect, engineer, industrial video user … the PAR will be just
right (which represents about 3/4 of the installed base of 3DS). When
this stuff finally comes out .. its going to be a lot of fun.
BTW I actually saw a beta MAX at the Washington ITVA show (we also had
a booth there). I was watching some really great "live video"
playback that was captured realtime using the beta MAX system. The
video was very nice .. and I'm talking with a lot of camera movement
too .. so tricks.
Good points. Although I'd like to reiterate that if a 1.3gb IDE drive
is now available then the equation would change. I believe DPS is
investigating a 2-drive interleaving solution for the PAR whereby the
highest quality will be maintained for longer.
Also, for someone new coming into the industry with some money to
spend and no framebuffer, I have been recommending the Matrix
Illuminator Pro and to that they could add the Movie Express card, I
should hope, making for a more affordable upgrade path. However, I'm
not new, already have a targa+, and have practically no money to
spend. I'd be taking a leap of faith investing in the DPS PAR even.
Therefore, I'll go with the cheapest thing that works for me.
The Matrox MAX will probably have its own set of issues, for example
it'll likely need a dedicated hardrive to make it work properly, too.
If people think they can start putting their word processing files on
the hardrive too, and get 30fps performance at high-quality, they're
in for a nasty surprise.
It'd be interesting to have an independent panel do side-by-side
comparisons of the new JPEG solutions and see which gave the best
performance. A trade show isn't good because each manufacturer will
choose clips that show favourable performance to it's solution.

A note of possible interest from the latest Digital Video magazine:
"Micropolis has a new family of 3.5 inch high capacity disk
drives, designed specifically for digital audio, video and multimedia
applications. The 2217 AV…. 1.76g formatted….. and the 2210
AV…. 1.05g. These drives claim to eliminate dropouts in audio and
video during recording and playback by delivering data in sequential
blocks so the information is transferred at sustained and continuous
speeds. ….. also eliminates the need to buy ram cache buffers that
compinsate for delays in video streams when a drive cannot maintain
uninterupted high data rates for realtime delivery."
Doesn't specify IDE or SCSI though. Probably SCSI 2 I imagine.
that sounds like it might be useful for the new JPEG cards. I hope
the manufacturers are taking notice, since they generally need to
approve a hardrive for use.
