#Sony UVW-1800 BetaCAM SP

I noticed a posting on this VTR a while ago. I have called Sony and
requested info, but the person I talked to could not locate any
literature specifically on this unit.
My understanding is that it has Timecode read/Gen and TBC, and it is
priced under $10,000.
Can anyone give me more details on this deck, such as when it will be
available, quality, features, specs?

I posted a message about this deck a little bit ago. Yes, it sounds
too good to be true, but Sony has this deck out and it is shipping
now. It looks like DTI (my company) will be carrying it for the
animation and desktop video markets (no video suites … don't want
to piss-off the big-boy video houses ya'know).
The deck is a frame accurate, BetaCAM SP deck. It is basically
stripped down and doesn't come standard with front panel editing
features commonly found on the other BetaSP decks. But it does come
with TBC & Timecode and is ready for animation. It only has 2
channels of audio and requires metal tape to provide high enough
spec's (other decks can use the Oxide tapes with acceptable
performance).
All in all, it is a great deck…nicely built and designed. The list
price is something like $9,495 (or very close to that). With this
deck, I can't see why anyone would by a $7k S-VHS deck.

I thought the PVW-2800 also required metal tape. If it works with oxide tape,
that'd be great. I'm saving to purchase one of these next year.

Thanks for the info on the Sony UVW-1800. I have a heavy background
in computers, but not in video. Provided I get enough backing from
some of the large local companies, I hope to build a good setup.
I have some questions for you:
1) Do you feel this deck is sufficient quality for TV Broadcast?
2) Would you recommend any similar/competing decks I should look into before
making any buying decisions?
3) Could you send me any literature on the UVW-1800? Even a simple photocopy
would help.
4) Where is you company located? Mine is in Michigan. This *might* be a
factor in what deck and from whom I buy. I would prefer a local dealer, but
sometimes that is not the best option.
I appreciate any help you can offer.

Yes. The video spec's are nearly identical to the higher-end BetaCAM decks.
You would have no problem getting customers to accept your work off of this
deck.

No. This deck sets a new price/performance standard in the BetaCAM/component
relm. With a list price of $9,495 … nothing can even get close (its only $2k
more than a new Panasonic S-VHS AG-7750H).
