I have to disagree I have the latest excellence! and it prints POSTSCRIPT files
fine. I print over a NOVELL network after coping the file to a KLONE. I have
also had success in doing the same with MAC printer servers
Final Copy II is the definitive word processor on any platform. It has AWESOME
output to 9 pin printers and every other printer I can think of WORD is missing
alot of remedial features that AMIGA wordproccesors still have. And WORDPERFECT
is about as INTUITIVE as UNIX.
by the way. I have been doing DTP on the Amiga since 1985, the school I
attended (Savannah College of Art and Design) purchased the FIRST 25 Amigas off
the assembly line. Nobody remebers with AMIGA was the only platform with the
over used term (WSIWIG
(WYSIWYG).
" FCII is the definitive word processor on any platform." Jarrod, get
real. FCII has great dot matrix printout and is probably sufficient for
90% of casual users, but it is hardly a powerhouse like word 6.0. Maybe
you might like to do a table of contents? How about footnotes? Tables?
If so, it's just too bad, because you can't do any of them in FC. These
features have been in Word for more than four years.
How have you escaped the dreaded mashed font problem in excellence!? All
my postscript printouts and those of everyone else I've ever heard of show
the same problem with the fonts in excellence! Something is wrong with
the aspect ratios and the fonts are wider and shorter than they should be.
Other than that I have been very happy with excellence!

Karl,
Maybe you need another look at SoftWood. They have a new product out
called Final Writer. This is not an upgrade to FCII, but a new product.
Some of the fetures in Final Writer not in FCII are:
Sectioned Document
Multiple master pages
Table of Contents
Table of Illustrations
Bibliography
Endnotes
Index
Outline
Text Clips
Text Block objects
Text Block Rotation
Graphic Rotation
Cut/Copy/Paste graphics
Group/ungroup graphics
Encapsulated Postscript support
User configurable button strips
User configurable 'User' menu
Named Text Styles
Delete documents within program
Postscript halftoning, thumbnails, scaling, and crop marks
Additional ARexx macros
Additonal user preference settings
String command execution
Auto-save backups
25 usefull sample ARexx macros
100 EPS clip-art images
120 Outline fonts
I know, you want footnotes, and they only offer Endnotes. But you should
be able to use the multiple master pages feature for footnotes. FW will
also print EPS graphics to graphic printers.
I have nothing to do with SoftWood – am just a user thinking about getting
FW with their special price offer.

Thanks, that is most interesting. I didn't know that there was a
special offer on Final Writer, I thought the offer was on FCII. If
you do get FW let us know what you think.
Karl, I'll most likely get Final Write, since the cost to FCIIr2 owners
isn't too bad – US$55 if ordered before 15 December.
But I will not be a good person to ask for opinions on this type of
software. I am not a "Power" word processor user. Usually use FC for
letters, nothing fancy. I have no use for headers, footers, table of
contents, end notes, etc.. Anything more advanced then letters, I do in
ProPage. Maybe some of the tasks I use ProPage for will be shifted to FW
when I get it.
From the brochure they sent, FW looks similiar to FC, but more
gadgets/buttons on the top. Speller checker looks the same.
Hasn't anybody in the states received the brochure and upgrade info? Am I
the only one?

There seems to be a bit more discussion in AmigaVendor's Softwood section.
See you there.

O.K., I guess I'll check with Softwood. Thanks.

Hi Kelly,
<Hasn't anybody in the States received the brochure and upgrade info?
Am I the only one?>
No, you're not alone- I got my packet from Softwood in the mail today and
will probably send off for the upgrade in the next couple of weeks.Like
you, anything more advanced than letters or newsletters and I would go
elsewhere- it's a great WP program.

wow…. 🙂 now how much does it retail for? and what can you find it
on the street for? do they offer a trade up for ProWrite users? how
much hd space does it take up? does it have any import/export
options? [not really a dire need, since i use my amax w/ write now to
convert my stuff, but it would be nice to be able to directly convert
an amiga doc to a pc/mac format without having to go through the
ascii stage]
i think it's great that they're finally giving an amy wp some more
muscle. i hope they do not go down the road of Word/WP/AmiPro and
start tossing in features only 1% of the user base really uses which
leads to a wp taking up over 20megs of hd space!
I just talked to Softwood this morning, and the competitive upgrade
is $100.00 plus shipping.
>I just talked to Softwood this morning, and the competitive upgrade >is

ouch, that's a little steep for me. i do use a word processor daily,
but i do not know if i could justify the cost of upgrading since
prowrite does work for me.
i guess i'll go see if new horizons has anything planned for prowrite.
it would be nice to them upgrade it so that it is more competative
with FW. that way there would be more choices for everybody.
I don't really have a choice. I've been whining for almost a year
(since MSS went Tango Uniform) that there wasn't a decent word
processor on the Amiga. Now that someone is at least trying, I guess
I'd better support them and get it. And if they sell enough, maybe
they'll add the other features I want (tables and footnotes) in a
later revision.
How does one talk to Softwood? Thew last 5 messages I've sent disappeared
into the twilight zone……is that faint electronic music I hear in the
background?

Thanks, means I'll have to ring at some funny hour from Australia 🙂

Bob, you are best to go and ask SoftWood those questions. They are over
in AmigaVendor.
73, Kelly
i know and i already did before asking over here. 🙂 the softwood
sysops seem to be dead at the moment…. 🙂 i did not see very many
posts and they have not answered an AREXX/PW question i posted two
days ago. so i wandered over here thinking somebody might know
something, and it see if jumping over the FW was worth it.
