#Which Amiga for Toaster?

Hi Tony!
This is addressed to you, but I'd really like everybody to chime in on this
one.
I've *finally* got the cash to get my LightWave workstation. Lightwave is the
only thing I'm interested in doing with the Toaster right now. I can do pretty
much everything else with my Macs. Also, I'm planning to get a Screamer just
after the first of the year, so take that into consideration.
So my question is this: Which Amiga would you reccommend? The A4000, (and how
would you set it up…RAM, etc)? Or an 040 accelerated A2000 or A3000?
I got a very fast 1 gig drive for my Mac for a little over $1000…is that
comparable for Amiga 1 gig drives?

I'd recommend getting a 4000. While not as fast as a souped up 2000, the
4000 is the foundation for future products from NewTek and with a
Screamer, the speed won't matter…

performing for you guys on the seaQuest animations?
The Screamer is screamin! We're using it to do final shots.
Get a 4000. IMO, with you working in LW, you'll find it to be
entirely worth the cost of the 4000 just to have the feature enabled
that makes selected items in layout and modeler display as bright
yellow.
Looks like the 4000 is getting the nod from most of you guys in the
know. I'm thinking that's the way I'll go. Would you reccommend
picking one up from a dealer or mail order? I get all my Mac stuff
thru the mail and have always been very satisfied.

It surprised me, but the Amiga dealer nearest me (Opus One Video, Memphis, TN)
beat all the mail order houses by about $75; quite naturally, I bought from
the dealer, but I've also bought many things mail order, as well.
Are you gonna offer Screamer rendering services on an outside basis ??

There's a couple of Amiga dealers in the DFW area and I'll check 'em
out for pricing.

Ya know, I really only ever thought about using the Screamer for my
own rendering, but it won't be working all the time. I don't know. If
there's a need and it doesn't interfere with my own productions, I'd
probably consider it. Wonder what a fair price for rendering services
would be? Hmmmmm…sure would help me recoup the 10K, eh?

What do _I_ think would be a fair price for you to charge for Screamer
rendering?? Gee, this will be easy. .01/frame <g>
Better plan on closer to $15K for the Screamer; gonna take a LOT of RAM…

A penny a frame, huh? Hell, if I could get it for that I wouldn't buy the
Screamer. <g>
As for taking a lot of RAM…I thought that would be taken care of with the 4
RISC boards…but I've been trying to find out all I can about the Screamer,
and I've still got a lot to learn.

I forget just how much RAM the Screamer comes with, but I remember the article
saying that it falls woefully short of the amount realistically needed to
handle big projects at the speed that you buy the Screamer to attain…

It hasn't been determined yet how much ram will ship with the Screamer.
It's all going to depend on the price of ram at the time it ships.

I thought I remembered seeing something about the amount of RAM that would be
included, way back in the initial press release for the Screamer.

Memory: Internal Cache: 32K on each processor
Secondary Cache: Up to 8 mb
Program Memory: Expandable to 1 gigabyte
It doesn't say how much 'program memory' will ship.

A Amiga 2000 with a fast 040 accelerator is faster then a A4000 `BUT'
I would suggest you get a A4000. You get ALOT of features with this
that you don't get with a A2000 and since you are getting a Screamer
speed isn't a issue.

Amigas doesn't use any `special' drives so all you have to do is match
the drive to the type of controller, either SCSI or IDE.

I'm going to get the A4000. Now…I know SCSI. What's IDE? Which is better? On
the Mac SCSI2 is faster than SCSI. Is an IDE drive faster than a SCSI?
