#3DS & disk doublers

I've been running Autocad release 12 with 3D studio for 4 months on my
486/50 clone with 8mb ram. I've had very few problems. Running
out of disk space though, so I tried SuperStor PRO's latest
version. It has worked flawlessly with Extended Foxpro and all
Windows apps and works perfectly during a simple Autocad session.
However, when I try to render a drawing using 3d Studio, the
following error appears after a screen black out and a 30 second
wait:
Mfree error — validity check failure!
ptr1=77b40c, ptr2=77b416, *ptr1=E, *ptr2=1
HEAPMGMT – heap error #: 1a
Cheap stack dump linked in => no dump
Aborting…..
I then must re-boot. It does the same thing whether I load the
superstor driver in conventional, extended, or extended without
using UMB's.
Has anyone else had this problem. Thanks in advance for any
help…….Tom

Well, I use STACKER. But you might be sure that you are directing the
swap file for the PharLap DOS Extender used by 3DS over to an uncompressed
partition.

Tom,
3DS, more than any other application, relies on the VMM swap drive that Phar
Lap creates for memory intensive tasks such as rendering. This swap drive
should be placed on an UNCOMPRESSED drive.
What many people do to gain some benifit from Disk compression is to compress a
portion of their drive, and leave another prtion uncompressed. Then direct the
Phar Lap swap files to the uncompressed section of the hard drive.

P.S. You can direct the swap file to a certain drive with the CFIG386 3DS
-SWAPDIR command. Refer to your reference manual for details.
BRIAN, thanks for help with 3ds and disk doublers. Seems a shame
not to be able to use doublers when they do such good compression
on dwg's. Glad to hear I still might be able to make it happen.

Wellll…I've been using AddStor's SuperStor on one machine to compress
_everything_ except a Windows permanent swap file and have had no problems,
even with 90 meg 3DS swap files on the compressed drive. So compression is not
totally out of the question. My average compression works out at 1.9 to 1. It
might slow the system a little, but nothing I've been able to perceive compared
to uncompressed drives.
