Questions on 3DS

Gentlemen: Would appreciate info: 3DS update. Which is last version
of 3DS ? Is it worthwile to update ? Can you describe major NEW
features and changes ? Cost ? Thanks for taking the bother. Emilio
The latest version of 3ds is Release 3, which just shipped last month. It
contains over 200 new features, among which are a new renderer (faster and
higher quality), network rendering, and a completely new Materials Editor. For
a complete list of new features, download 3DS30.RLS in DL9. As to whether it's
worthwhile updating, I'd have to say you'd be crazy not to — but then, I'm one
of the developers, so I'm not unbiased. No doubt someone else can answer to
that.

6/93..
Thank you!!!
-Steve
The latest files are uploaded into the What's New library (DL9).

Emilio,
The latest version of 3DS is Release 3. You can download the file 3DS3.RLS to
see the press release which describes many of the new features.

In 3ds release 3, there are lots of great improvements. The best (IMHO) is the
Materials editor, which is a lot different – the control you now have over you
materials is fabulous – you now can use 2 different texture maps, everything
has what's called masks, which is a another image file that reduces the effects
of the texture map, but adds it's own looks (ie: dust on an oak table). The
power of the new materials editor really needs to be seen to be fully
understood. But it is awesome!
Also, if you work on a network, you can use "slave" machines to render, even if
they don't run a full installation of 3DS. You can see the power of this. There
a LOTS of little things, stuff that I'm still discovering a month later. An
upgrade is WELL worth it!
