#Numerical input in 3DS
17 messages in this thread
Is there any way to input values, via keyboard, when creating and/or moving
objects in the 3D editor? If so, can someone direct me to the relevant portions
of the manual, please? I have cruised the indices, but found no obvious
pointers…

Yea, right! <g> Try the index in the Advanced User Guide, which will point you
the the CHAPTER titled "Keyboard Data Entry" starting on page 99. <bg>

REALLY! I confess I've never looked at the advanced users guide. I looked in
the REFERENCE Manual where I thought (reasonably, IMHO) that some mention of it
ought to be made. So, I feel SOMEWHAT stupid, but not a whit ashamed. (I guess
I better pull out *all* those wittle manuals out of the box, too, huh?)

P.S. Look for my surprising EMAIL to you….
If it'll make you feel any better, the keyboard section used to be an appendix
of the Reference Manual in R2, but the R3 Ref. Man. got too big for the
binding, so we moved the appendices to the Advanced User's Guide. (For a while
there, they were trying to convice us to split the Ref. Man. into two volumes.
Wouldn't _that_ have been fun.)

NOT!
Jack:
Although what would have made life even easier would have been for every volume
to have the same index, so a look in any one would point you to the one you
need. Just designate the book with the page, and our lives would be simpler
again! Now where is that little fella again?
Greg Pyros
You'd have to talk to the Framemaker folks about how to create an
index for multiple volumes. That's the software we use to write the
docs. It's powerful in many ways, but there are certain limitations.
At least, with this release, we were able to cross-reference between
chapters of the Ref. Manual.
Jack,
Which platform are you running FrameMaker on? SGI?
Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
I'm running it on a SPARC.

I hadn't figured you for a UNIX nurd! Welcome to the club! <g>
Do you have your 3DS PC networked to it?
Greg Pyros
I am NOT a UNIX nurd! I'm lucky to get the damn thing booted and
running Framemaker. (And that alone seems to take forever.) It's all
I can do to copy or delete files. I'm using PCNFS to network between
the SPARC and my PC — only so I can copy graphics files to the
SPARC. Now that I've got some free time, I borrowed a sound board
from a friend and I'm trying out some games. (Haven't played a
computer game in several years.) All I've found is that I can't have
PCNFS and the soundboard at the same time. I've clean run out of IRQs.
Ah well.
David:
Found your surprise e-mail, Merry Christmas to you, also! <g>
And I had figured a 3D Stud like you to have started with the Advanced User's
Guide and worked backwards from there! <g>
Greg Pyros
OK. A compliment makes up for the wrist slap of before. <g>
Regrettably, this 3DS stud is an evening/weekend warrior, with most
of the day taken up by my day job of dealing with Postscript errors,
DESQView and Windoze intermittencies and general micro<->micro
communications. But, hey! it puts tofu on the table, right?
DT
See the Keyboard Data Entry Appendix in the Advanced User's Guide.
andy
Thanks for your easy-to-swallow pointer to the AUG, which I overlooked. <g>
DT
Andy:
Is this the Andy Reese from Autodesk?
Greg Pyros
Hey Andy,
Long time no "read"… <g>
