Hi.
I wonder if someone at Corel could help me with this question:
A colleague of mine in Zimbabwe conveyed to me his interest in obtaining
software to optimize the use of his Corel SCSIPro. I know nothing about
SCZIPros, etc, but aparently he is having a hard time finding this software in
Zimbabwe. Is it possible for him to obtain this software? Is it something
that Corel gives out free (like drivers) or is this software that one buys?
Are there export/transport laws that would make it illegal for me to obtain
this software for him and send it to him?
Any information on this would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

I doubt if it's violating any laws to send the product of one Commonwealth
nation (Canada) to another (Zimbabwe), but CorelSCSI is a commercial product
and it's for sale, not something given away. Where one would buy it in Zimbabwe
is beyond me (but somebody from Corel should be on this week and might know)
but it is certainly available from Corel Canada, Corel Eire, and from just
about every mail order house I know.
Thanks for the information, Jack. I'm still a little uncertain, though. The
problem is that the product would be bought by people working in an American
institution with U.S. grant money (although, coincidently, the person who will
actually buy it happens to be a Canadian living in the U.S. at the moment!) and
then shipped overseas to Zimbabwe. Thus, it would be a lot like buying
"technology" in the U.S. and shipping it to another country, not between two
commonwealth countries.
This may be a matter not of someone who is working in a country where a product
can't be got, but rather someone who does not have a lot of expertise but knows
they need something. My colleague simply wants to return a favor by picking up
the tab for some products that this person cant seem to find on her grant
(which had in turn saved a lot of money because his institution didn't charge
her for something when she was visiting there… its a long story!)
Actually, he's got the CorelSCSI, but he's looking for "optimizing software".
All I know is what was scribbled on the back of an envelope and shown to me!
The "optimizing software" may be something Corel provides with their hardware
and then upgrades, like a printer driver. Or it could be some monster product
for $695!

I haven't any idea what sort of optimizing software there would be for
CorelSCSI. CorelSCSI IS updated regularly to reflect support for more devices,
and those updates are provided free from Corel for the asking to registered
users. The latest version is CorelSCSI 1.2b, which can be gotten free from
Customer Service, Section 4. This week they're bringing out version 2.0, and
that's a cost upgrade ($79, I think) but it's the latest stuff.
He might be talking about moving from CorelSCSI to CorelSCSI Pro, but unless
he's running an elaborate jukebox-type Novell system he probably only needs the
2.0 upgrade.
