#C++ rumors

I have heard a rumor that SAS C/6.5 has been released or will be
released shortly. I have heard that this version includes C++ support.
I hope that this is true because I am eagerly awaiting a version of
C++ which runs on the Amiga. I have been using OOP design for over a
year now and don't have any decent tools on the Amiga. Please reply
and tell me where I can get an update.

6.5 is out since last friday, (mine is on the way, heh heh), but as
far as I know it does not include C++. That is a separate product
that is due out sometime before the end of the year. Call SAS at
(919) 677-8000 for details.
Karl, My upgrade Notice tells me the C++ is part of 6.5 and is
available now for $69. It flat says 6.5 includes C++. Says nothing
about get 6.5 now and buy C++ for more money later.
Hmmmm…I wonder why I haven't gotten the upgrade notice (appearently
others haven't?)? I sent in the card for 6.x (whichever). And someone here
not too long ago (from SAS?) was saying the same 6.5 would include the ++
extensions. Hmmmmmm….

I got my notice Saturday. I called my order in today, and they confirmed
that C++ is included, that the bockorders would be cleared up by Wednesday
and that mine should ship on Thursday or Friday. So if you have ordered
6.5, last week, yours is probably shipping as we type.
If you have not ordered and havenot received your upgrade notice, I
suspect that alphabetical order, or mail bundling and routing may explain
it. Anyway, call SAS book sales dept with your credit card and user reg
number on the ready, and you can order. 919-677-8000 x7001

No, I haven't ordered. No, I haven't received an upgrade notice. I did
register. I think the alphabetical order may be the reason(?) since you're
a 'C' and I'm an 'L'. Thanks for the number, that's probably around here
in my docs somewhere. Although I'm not sure the extension would be.
Reaching for my wallet/credit card but, oh well it's too late tonight!
By the way, good to hear a rather definitive answer on the C++ 'rumors'
that started this thread…

I suspect zip code has a lot more to do with it than alphabetical order. We
use a mail house that does "trickle" letters out over a period of a week or
more. I don't know what system they use that makes it work that way, but it
does.
I just got my upgrade letter yesterday, and it was addressed to me at my work
address. Kind of comical if you think about it – getting an upgrade letter
for SAS/C delivered to SAS Institute, Inc. 8^)

That is kinda comical. SAS mailing notices to itself…I'm not in a big
hurry for the upgrade but, who do I whine to if I don't get it in a few
days/weeks? Just the Tech support line in the book?

Call (919)677-8000 and ask for Book Sales. If you have your registration
number, give it to them; otherwise, they will look you up by name/address.

I am fairly sure that 6.5 does include C++. I guess they are going the
way of most C compiler vendors in that respect. As I heard it, the
original lattice C++ was V1 of the language (pretty naff), and this
one is V2 (very much better, stable, with most of the really useful
stuff ie multiple inheritance). The language is currently available
at V3 (ie templates), with V4 (ie exceptions) defined. BTW, these
version numbers are ballpark releases, that may/may not be what they
actually were/will be called.
Oh goody, I hope so. Mine hasn't gotten here yet, so we will see.

The correct version is 6, the revision is 50 – i.e. 6.50, not 6.0.
6.50 does include C++, and it is compliant with the ANSI C++ working paper
as of about six months or so ago, when we froze, except for templates and
exception handling. Thus, it really is a step beyond C++ V2.x. We are
already working on the rest of C++ V3.0 and will continue to keep pace with
the ANSI committee (we have a representative, Gavin Koch).

Its no rumor. If you are a SAS C 6.x owner, y ou can upgrade for $69.
I got my upgrade notice Saturday and the latest Amaxzing has SAS add
with some of the C++ support features enumerated, (like symbolic
debugger, source file variable locator etc.).

I have before me a letter from SAS Institute Inc. informing me that
my order for SAS/C DEV SYS FOR AMIGADOS C++ 6.50 UPGRADE is
backordered. It is expected to ship on November 22, 1993. Call SAS
Institute at 919-677-8000. Ask for the Book Sales Department. p.s.
It is refered to as 6.50 (SIX point FIFTY).

There is some misinformation floating around here, and some good
information. Joe Hanson is basically correct about everything it was
possible for him to be correct about:
1. The version number is 6.50 (version 6 revision 50) not 6.5
2. The upgrade from V6.x costs $69 (US only; Europe, DM120)
3. Version 6.50 includes C++
4. The upgrade letter states that we will begin shipping November 22.
The one thing that Joe didn't know is that we actually beat our deadline and
began shipping 6.50 today (November 16) instead of waiting for the 22nd.
Upgrade letters went out to all V6, V5 and V4 customers a week or so ago. V6
letters went out first class and should be arriving any day if they are not
there already. V5 and V4 letters went out third class and may take a couple
more weeks to arrive.
