Thanks for your help. Yes, I had tried it without the jumper and also,
installed it backwards. Neither of them helped. Let me know of any other
ideas.

Well, I know someone stuck the ROM's in the "wrong" sockets — i.e., the "0"
ROM in the "1" socket and vice versa — and it worked. His was an A3000, but I
guess it might be worth a shot.

An A500 doesn't have 2 ROM sockets to try. There's only the one, which
is what separates the A3000 3.1 version from the A500 / A2000 version
(along with SCSI-stuff).
I wrestled with the 3.1 ROM in my A2000 until I was completely convinced
I blew the ROM or something. I really tried it all, and I was so angry
because the 2.04 chip had worked right away, without a jumper cable.
I put it in backwards, with cable, without cable and all possible
combinations of those two. I then decided to try 1 more time. I cleaned
the pins on the rom with some alcohol, got out a magnifying glass and
seated the ROM until all the pins looked okay. I then checked each and
every pin with the magnifying glass, pushed the chip in all the way and
rechecked if all the little metal tabs touched the pins. Everything
looked fine. Then, a bit nervous, I switched the machine on, waited,
and finally THERE IT WAS! 3.1!
I felt *so* relieved. I already thought I blew the ROM, or the machine
or both but… neither. It worked. So I'd say, work very carefully and
hopefully the thing will work. ROMs seem fairly capable of taking some
abuse.
