Can anyone help me get straight on using a new modem I just picked up? I
just recieved the $99. LineLink 144e 14400 Fax/modem from mac warehouse.
Autopilot uses it just fine but I can't get my terminal program (JrComm)
set up right to use it. I just get garbage when I connect and am not even
sure it is connecting above 2400. I have been using an older US Robotics
Courier HST. Changed my init string to AT&M0&K3DT to just get it to dial,
what else do I need to do to use this new modem? Any guidence
appreciated.

That modem needs to be configured quite differently for non-Mac use. I
could go check my notes somewhere if you offer me a cookie or something.
I ended up returning mine because it wouldn't consistently sync at high
baud rates, but I could get it to work fine in every other respect.

Do you like Chocolate chip or Oreos? Myself I prefer pecan
sandies (Keebler brand only!). I have been able to get it to log on
to various BBS's and have noticed too, that sometimes it will connect
quickly and sometimes it will time out before it is finished
handshaking….but when it does connect all I get is garbage on the
screen, alot of xxx, ooo and escape charactors. I had to set JrComm
to ignore carrier detect and change &M4 to &M0 to get it (JrComm) to
talk to the modem. Other than that I have not changed anything
permanently. Have played with various settings but change everything
back to default. Also noticed that V.42bis is not set (don't have
the modem hooked up at present to check) but beleive there is no
setting shown for &Q.
Haven't open it up but is there anything in there? This is the
lightiest modem I have ever seen!

As usual, my notes aren't as complete as I remember them, but the
following commands affect the listed attributes making them behave
more like defaults for non-Mac modems…
AT&D2 — DTR
AT&R1 — DTR and RTS
AT&C1 — DCD used
If you missed something, it was probably AT&R1, Macs use DTR and RTS for
wierd stuff.

I just got the LineLink 144e too. My users guide says AT&R1 sets it for
Mac mode. AT&R0 sets it for PC mode. The following commands are what I
use and it works fine

AT&D2

I still cannot seem to get my LineLink 144e to connect properly.
It will connect at 9600 but all I get is garbage after the
connection. Would you please be so kind as to send me your users
profile "AT&V" to compare with mine, so that I can see what is
wrong? What terminal program are you using? Using JRcomm I can
connect fine at 2400with my HST, but using the same terminal settings
with the LL144e, after the connection, garbage. Very frustrating as
I can connect to CI$ at 9600 with no problems at all.

The reason the garbage is appearing on your screen is that you do not
have your databits set for 7 and your parity set for even. Once you
have that set the garbage will be legible. As far as your other
connections… CompuServe separates it's nodes into 300-2400bps and
9600bps (in select areas 14400). Check your local phone number (go
phones). By the way, does you modem support v.32 or is it only HST?
Our nodes do consist of USR modems…but we do not support HST. It
is possible that you set your software for 9600, call a 2400 number
and it auto-negotiates. If your modem does not support v.32 you will
not make a 9600bps connection.

I don't know if this will work or not, but one of the command
references I have says that issuing a AT command of &F1 will restore
the modem to IBM default parameters… while &F0 will restore the
modem to hayes default parameters.

For the time being it is disconnected and am back to using the HST
(most reliabel piece of hardware I have ever owned!) If I get a break
from work this weekend I will try your suggestion and get back to you!
