#HDBackup problems

I'm having a little trouble with the HDBackup utility in the Tools drawer.
I finally decided to back up the Work: partition on my hard disk. I
de-selected the files and directories I did not want to back up, and
HDBackup told me I would need 6.1 floppies to do it. I selected
"Compression" and "Set Archive Bits" from the options menu. The
estimated number of floppies changed to ??? as the manual claimed it
would. When I did the back up it still needed 7 floppies, in spite
of the compression, and no archive bits were set.
I did it over without compression, and it was no faster, comfirming my
suspicion that there was no compression the first time. What did I do
wrong? Or is HDBackup not entirely functional?

Clay,
The best thing you could do with HDBackup is to delete it and
pretend it never existed. Many people have had a great deal of
trouble with it. If your only problem with it so far was to find out
that commpression does not work, and it doesn't, consider yourself
VERY lucky. It is not uncommon to find that you can not restore
backups made with it even though it will give no indication that
anything wrong while making the backup. When it first showed up on
the 2.04 upgrade many people used it to back up their HD before
reformattting with 2.04 only to find they could not restore their
backups. Get rid of it and get a good commercial backup utility like
AmiBack.

yep. I tried it in exactly that manner and it wouldn't recover the
backup.
