#Amiga and Compuserve?

I'm trying connect to Compuserve using my Amiga 500 w/ 1 Meg. I would like to
know what comm software I need, where to get it, and where to get a good 2400
Baud external modem. I'm currently using my PC at work but I would like to use
my Amiga instead. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated,

Get AutoPilot for accessing Compuserve, its well worth it. Also I would
look for a 9600 Baud modem, I strted CIS with a 2400 and it took forever
to DL programs.

You have already gotten direction to AP.LHA.
2 things: first, READ THE DOCS. Thoroughly. 90% of the questions to AForums
about "problems" with AutoPilot derive from either not READING the docs, or
from IGNORING them.
Second, you may be initially dismayed at the price of the program ("Gee, it's
ONLY shareware…" AutoPilot is possible the best off-line reader program for
CIS for ANY platform, and will save you it's cost in connect time in the first
year you use it.

I believe you made an error about AutoPilot, it is not shareware.
It is a commercial product only available via this online service. The demo is
just that, a demonstration version of the program. You can't really do very
much with the program other than access the amiga fora unless you register it.

shareware) (And Steve: I didn't mean to mislead anyone).
What I meant is that most downloadable programs that ask for money ARE
shareware, and someone relatively new to the AmigaForums might conclude that
they were downloading a shareware program, and that the asking price was
awfully high for shareware.
You are, of course, quite correct. AP.LHA is a free demo of a full commercial
program. (A demo very sneakily designed to turn itself into the full commercial
program when the fee is paid.)

I don't know what AutoPilot is … it's commercial hiding in shareware
clothing? Who knows? Bottom line, registration is ONLY available via
CompuServe. Call it what you want, just register/purchase it.

Probably you don't know what it is because most people are a little silly about
how people use the terms. The whole idea of making a distinction between
quality commercial and quality shareware is silly. The sets of quality
software, bad software, expensive software, cheap software, shareware and
store-shelf overlap each other and can't be seperated.
Price and quality vary for both. Some people's prejudices or ignorance lead
them to believe there are certain price and quality conclusions they can draw
based on a program's distribution method.
Some high-quality and fairly expensive commercial products supported by large
offices with full time staff are distributed as shareware. Some one-person,
part-time endevours are released in shrink-wrapped store-shelf products.

Before you go and download AutoPilot you may want to check what equipment you
need to run it. I believe you have to have WorkBench 2.x, 3 megs of ram (1 meg
chip and 2 megs fast), and about 5 megs of hard drive space.

Everyones beaten me to the punch. I'm glad you decided to get 14,4
thats what I have although we still only have 9600 here as the fastest.
Sooner or later I'm sure we'll get something faster as I'm sure you will.

Given:
a) that CompuServe is about to start charging the same for 14400, 9600, and
2400 bps access, and
b) that NEW top quality 14400 fax-modems are selling for $130,
I would STRONGLY suggest you look for a used 14400 modem, as from someone who
has just decided to upgrade to 28800 (sorry, I'm keeping MY 14400 when I
upgrade <g>).

Thanks for the info. I was only looking for a 2400 Baud Modem because CIS
doesn't have any local nodes that support anything faster. After checking some
of the prices a 14,400 is only about $50 more than a 2400. 14,400 it is.

Gee, I thought they had pretty good 9600 and 14400 penetration by now. Where
are you?

I live in beautiful, sunny Southeastern Ohio. More specific I live in Athens
Ohio, home of Ohio University. Were happy because we just got 2400 Baud access.
I guess we'll get cable next month, and maybe paved roads in the near future.

& I was feeling sorry for myself waiting a yr now for Bellsouth to get
their act togethet & give us free dialing to Winston w/a local 9600 node!
BTW with AT&T's "Reaach out America" I dial to NYC from NC & go online for
10 cents a minute from 7p to 8a & on wkends. MUCH cheaper than calling
Winston 27 miles away. Inter state is cheaper than intra state…a CI$
employee put me on to this.
