GVP 030 vs Toaster

Hi all….
I recently installed a GVP GForce 040 accelerator in my Amiga 2000HD with the
"original" Toaster 2.0 board and the Toaster 3.0 software upgrade. 12 MB Fast
RAM and first 1MB chip and later 2 MB (See below)
When my uset-startup includes:
GVPCpuCtrl FASTROM MOVESSP
The toaster (and the system) crash when I run Toaster and the start Lightwave
or Paint.
I called Newek support (whom I now call NoTek support) and was told, "Oh, you
need more Chip RAM… You need 2MB"
so, I dutifully ordered a DKB Megachip, and installed it.
My toaster SILL crashed if the above line in in User-Startup…. :-<
If I change the line to:
GVPCpuCtrl MOVESSP
Toaster will at least come up and let me run Lightwave….
Any ideas folks????
I personally thing NoTek Support's response of "yeah, there's a bug with the
GVP 040" and that I needed to get more Chip RAM was BULLSHIT…Sorry, if anyone
is offended… but I am not only out a needless $200 for a MegaChip I didn't
need, but I am also pissed!!!
Any ideas folks? I've haven't got much logical advice from the NewTek
forum….
Any help would be appreciated….

I can understand your annoyance however, you are not "out $200" as you
have performed what is probably the most important hardware upgrade to
your system possible.
I have not had a chance to persue the G-Force FASTROM problem myself but
there definately is a problem there. What is difficult to determine is
"who's fault is it?"
I believe that if you run "CPU" you will see that you are indeed already
running "FASTROM" and I tend to suspect that this is the problem. That
is, trying to use GVPCpuCtrl to establish FASTROM when the machine is
already using FASTROM crashes the machine.

That depends. Early versions of CPU did not know how to deal with an '040's
MMU, so it would report things like "FASTROM" even though Kickstart was NOT
remapped. Just because CPU says so, doesn't mean it is so…

This shouldn't crash the machine, even if both programs correctly redirect
Kickstart. No matter who remaps first, we trap at the hardware level so our
remap would get used and CPU would just end-up wasting 512K of memory.
Hmmm, back to square one…

Humm, could be… I keep forgetting (while not actually using it) that the
machine is not running the latest software.
I agree that they should not crash the machine is that is certainly not
what we would call a "user friendly" way of telling someone that they
"should not do that."
BTW, though the disk set included the "dev" stuff, there was no form to be
filled out and thus, I am unable to gain access to the bbs.
