<Rendering Plant> A 3D Studio friendly BBS at (816) 525-5614. 1000's of meshes…I've been told. Sanford

>>Could you please tell me what the rendering plant is? << It's a 3D Studio oriented BBS. It has hundreds of files related to 3D Studio, rendering, ray tracing, fractals, drivers, tutorials, IPAS routines, etc. The number is 816-525-5614. It's a 28.8 kBps BBS, and this Friday the lines will be upgraded to data grade.

I logged onto rendering plant checked it out and was impressed w/ the idea so tonite I grabbed my wifes mcard (she's asleep!) and prepared to log on and pay up so I could download all those goodies. Problem: I can't succesfully log on! I get as far as "Do you want graphics?" I'm prepared w/ I DO, I DO and the next thing I know is NO CARRIER…… Is anyone else having this problem? TIA, Gary

Gary: Thanks for your interest. >> Problem: >> I can't succesfully log on! I get as far as "Do you want graphics?" I'm >>prepared w/ I DO, I DO and the next thing I know is NO CARRIER…… >> Is anyone else having this problem? Yeah, me. I logged on and looked around and it dropped carrier on me. So I hooked a phone up to the BBS line and dialed out and found the line to be full of static and pops. Today I was upgraded to a "Data Grade" line, and this is what I get?! This sucks. I even had a SW Bell tech out today going over the line with an analyzer and getting "good results." Maybe I should have left well enough alone! Anyway, I'll have the phone people out AGAIN tomorrow (or as soon as I can get them out), since I'm paying the big bucks now they'll have to try harder. Please try us out after friday afternoon, by then they should have fixed it. I'm eagerly awaiting the day that I can move on to other issues… >>TIA, Gary What does TIA mean? (I hope it's not mean!)

>>TIA is ThanksIn Advance! >>MEAN! Never! I don't know >>enough to be mean only humble! Thanks for the info, it's now in my acronym bank! {I knew you weren't being mean…} >>Really looking forward to the bbs >>can't wait, hats off to you for a way cool idea! You ought to be in good shape now. I spent the last two days with a very perseverant SW Bell repair dude, and we swapped a lot of stuff on the phone lines. At least they're not audibly grungy now, so I think they must be pretty clean. We kept the work order open for the weekend and if it comes back, he's coming back to fix it. So this weekend is a test for good connections and good downloads. I can't wait to get back to BBS improvement! I must have a thousand meshes in the queue to put on line!

I've been going through phone company hell, too. I have an "FX" (foreign exchange) line that reaches from my rural area into Milwaukee, which gives me a local call to the CIS nodes in Milwaukee. It costs about $130 a month, but it's cheaper than long distance. I wasn't able to get a reliable 28.8 connection on it, not even a steady 16.8 connection, but it would hold at 14.4. A few calls to the phone company revealed they could easily come up with a measurement in decibels that was "a little off", although the repair person knew how to measure this, they couldn't tell me exactly what it was – I'm sure it was some kind of attenuation. So they tweaked it in the "hot" direction that would supposedly help a data connection, and that made it worse. Then they moved it the other way (adding or removing filters, I think), and that was just as bad. So I had them put it back where it was. Then I found out there was a no-charge upgrade to "voice and data" quality lines (as opposed to "voice only"). This only cost the $30 for an on-site end-to-end frequency analyzer test that would prove the line had enough bandwidth. Just asking for this upgrade also eans they'd put higher-quality "cards" in the phone company offices for this line. All this happens on Friday… I'm very anxious to see how it turns out.

*** I even had a SW Bell tech out today going over the line with an analyzer and getting "good results." *** Phone Companies always get good results on line analyzer tests except in the most extreme error situations. For a data grade line they need to fire up "special" tests to really get a grip on the situation. In my experience (as a data communications field engineer for ten years), local phone companies do as little as possible because of cost. You have to keep "squeeking the wheel" untill they come thru. And of course we owe all of this poor service to the break up of "THE phone company"! Any way, PMJI with my two cents.
