Can an Amiga 500+ be used with a super VGA monitor and if so where can I obtain
a connection cable – I'd be grateful for any advice on this – Thanks
I'm not sure if you can use it on a VGA monitor, I have my Amiga 2000 hooked up
to a old radio shack CM-5 monitor, it only gets four colors but for what I use
it for is great. I got the cable from a company called Redmond Cable, they
will try and make any cable you want. They are located in Washington State and
have an office on the east coast. There numbers are. Washington

I currently have an Amiga 3000 hooked up to a Magnavox Enhanced VGA
monitor, and have no complaints about it (except for the sound. It has
none). I had originally bought the monitor for my son to use on his 1200,
but he prefered my original Cmdr 1084 S. So I took the VGA and bought a
set of KOSS speakers. It took a little doolding with the monitor
selection and prefs, but nothing major.

Have recently worked through a similar situation. I've got a Zenith VGA
hooked up to an A500 with Flicker Free Video2. I miss the ability to
genlock out of my A500 to the TV or VCR and the obviously better video I/O
capabilities of the 1084S. Any suggestions? The audio is much better now
through an amp and larger speakers.

Actually, I don't use my Amiga for vidio, I got the VGA to do away with
the flicker at high resulution on my word processor. So the loss of
genlock is no problem to me. Actually, I use my Amiga more like most
people would use a PC. But I refuse to put up with a half ASCI operating
system.

The A500+ with the ECS Agnus & Denise, and at least Amiga OS 2.05, can
generate a limited VGA signal.
The ECS Agnus & Denise do not have the bandwidth to create Hires (640×480)
VGA screens with more than 4 colors. And the Lores (320×480) will be
limited to 16 colors. The palette is limited to 64 colors (instead of
the full 4096 colors).
The ECS Agnus & Denise can also generate the SuperHires (1280×512) modes,
but again the bandwidth limits them to 4 colors out of 64 colors. This
mode an be generated on a NTSC or PAL monitor.
However, only the NTSC or PAL modes are available from powerup. The VGA
modes require additional monitor drivers loaded by the Startup-Sequence.
Also, some programs (especially games) bypass the OS, thus the they will
output theseselves in PAL (NTSC) mode only.
You can hook a VGA monitor to the A500+, but unless it is a (~15-kHz)
multiscan monitor, you will also need a TV or RGB-analog for those
programs that can't use the VGA modes.
