#Need "Hot" Effect

I am currently rendering a series shots where a futuristic craft takes off vertically, rotates its engines, and flies away. This is all being rotoscoped over captured video. I render over the video in Imagine, and then use an unaltered set of captured video frames and the rubthrough function of DCTV paint to restore the forground objects. This works out VERY well. But now, in the closeups, I want to render the "heat signature" of the engines. I know with some experimenting I could come up with a combination of object, attributes, and textures that would work. But since tests for this effect will need to be raytraced to get the refraction of the background it WILL be time consuming. So I am wondering if anyone out there has already tackled this problem and can give me a little head start. Thanks in advance. …Warp Engine Engaged… -Paul-

Sounds like you could use alpha channel for the compositing, it'd make your job easier, and maybe use it for the heat signature stuff, too. Let me think on it for a bit, and I'll upload a text file. Jim Shields Regal Rodent Development

How does the alpha channel feature work on imagine? is it kind of like using a greyscale pic to blend brushes on to surfaces?, where do you access it? Edgar.

I wasn't talking about an alpha channel feature of Imagine; as far as I know there isn't one at this time, but it is planned for a future release. I was talking about using travelling mattes and alpha compositing, probably within ADPro. That's how I do graphics over video capture sequences. Jim Shields Regal Rodent Development

I think I remember reading alpha channel support on of the ads for Imagine, but I don't know what they mean by that, I understand what you are talking about. I once did something like that by using a linear gradient on a cylinder placed at the scapes, and made a filter map of a greyscale image to go from fully transparent to solid, I changed the axes position over time (3 d using 3 different objects, to give it a variation (activity), maybe that will work for you, unless you are looking for the distortion effect that heat creates. edgar.
