#Diamon Stealth 64 / FLC
6 messages in this thread
I have an associate who is a new user to 3DS, whom has 3DS4, and is
working on a new DEC workstation with a Diamond Stealth 64PCI. He is
having problems with his machine locking up while playing flics from
inside of 3DS. It does not lock up everytime, and he is not sure of
which resolution(s) he is using for fli/flc display. He says the
bigger flics seem to lockup quicker. I am not sure what the problem
could be; his machine has 64mb RAM.
I am not yet familiar with anything after release 2.0. Does anybody
have any ideas of where to look for potential conflicts?
I have included his autoexec, config, and 3ds.set files after my sign-off. If
anybody can tell me where to start to look I would greatly appreciate it!
Thanks!!

His Autoexec.bat looks like:
C:\WINDOWS\net start
@ECHO OFF
LH /L:0;1,45488 /S C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE /X 512 128
PROMPT $p$g
PATH C:\DOS
PATH %PATH%;C:\WINDOWS
LH /L:1,40384 C:\MOUSE\MOUSE CENHANCE
LH /L:1,6384 DOSKEY
C:\DOS\MSCDEX/D:CDROM1
SET TEMP=C:\TEMP
His Config.sys looks like:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE 2048 x=c000-c7ff
BUFFERS=20,0
FILES=40

DEVICEHIGH /L:1,4560 =C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS
rem device=c:\sdms\aspicam.sys
rem device=c:\sydos\sydriver.sys
And the front of his 3DS.set looks like:

He says the bigger flics seem to lockup quicker.
_______________________________________________ Do you mean bigger as in
1280×1024 or bigger as in 35MB flics? If you stick to resolutions of 640×480
or less then playback should be smooth with a utility like aaplayhi. This
utility is free and can load the entire flic into RAM before playing. Playing
higher resolutions than 640×480 can be sluggish because of all of the pixel
differences between frames. I doubt that many here on the forum go beyond
640×480 for flics. Higher resolutions usually go out to video tape.
If you mean that the file size is bigger when the animations lockup I don't
have any good suggestions to offer. FWIW I have a DEC with 72MB of RAM and a
Diamond Viper and haven't experienced any problems with flics of 40 MB and
less.

Michael,
>> Diamond Stealth 64PCI
Are you sure this isn't a Stealth64 PCI *VRAM*? If it's the VRAM model, he
should use the settings for the S3 964 chip. (I *think* the standard Stealth64
uses the S3 864.)
John
The "standard" Stealth 64 uses VRAM. The DRAM version, which uses the 864
chip, is called the "Stealth 64 DRAM".

Got it; thanks.
I think you are right!
I'll pass this along.
