#PC to TV Adapters

I am looking for an adapter to display VGA output (at least 800x600x256 colors)
on a 19" TV.
There are several devices on the market at various prices. I am looking at the
AITech PRO PC/TV Plus.
Any suggestions or experince?

Anything above 640×480 is redundant for NTSC output since it cannot
display even that many lines. In case you're interested I have a
RocGen card I will sell you. It has NTSC composite out and in(for
overlay and chroma-key effects) and will do 640×480 32k colors. The
company sells a S-Video out add-on for about $75, I think. It works
great and has titler software. Only 1.5 years old. It was over $350
new but I will let it go for $150 (including shipping). E-mail me if

Why does the PAR output to 752 x 480? (This is not a riddle, it is really a
question.) If I can get away with 640 x 480, what benefits are there to going
this resolution?
You can get away with 640×486, but higher horizontal resolution will
get you a better picture in NTSC. Mitch is completely wrong in his
statement that NTSC can't handle more than that. Horizontal rez is
NOT fixed in that format. The current digital standard resolution is
720×486 (D1 rez), and analog is 752×486 (BetaSP resolution).
So is it possible to display rez higher than this? Say, 800 x 600, or 1024 x
768. I suppose the only problem would by the encoder. If I create an animation
that is 800 x 600 and can display and play that on my computer, the only
limiting factor would be the encoder/converter—-it that correct? Is the
screen value constant? Higher resolutions, which you suggest, implies that it
isn't.
A Truevision AT-Vista will happily put out a legal signal of
1008x486x32 bits, and will feed directly into any video equipment
that accepts RGB input, for example the Sony LaserDisc CRV Recorder.
In fact, that is the default resolution for Inscriber on the Vista.
We use it all the time.

Accroding to Image North and Mainframe Computer Graphics, the
ATVista version of Inscriber only displays at a 16-bit color depth.
Still have 256 level key output. Your source files might have been
32-bit. Inscriber does a good job of color reduction, huh?

Interesting! I have always used Inscriber over a live video
background (which should be at 24 bit, right?) so I never realized
that the text overlay was only 16 bit. Now you've got me curious,
I'm going to have to go test it out – thanks for the "spare-time"
project! :^)

Does this mean that higher resolutions such as this must be in RGB,
and not converted to NTSC for the higher res? I've seen a
"hyperconverter" that claims 1024×768 24 bit to NTSC. Is this over
kill for broadcast quality?

This is not true. Horizontal resolution in NTSC is not fixed. There
are devices out there that send well over 1000×486 to NTSC. And D1,
which is the current high-end standard in broadcast is 720×486.
True. What I was refering to was the resolution of the average TV
set. BTY, isn't the res of standard NTSC signal over the air or
cable really low? I guess the higher your source the better your
final output but a lot of it gets lost before it gets to the average
viewer (especially if it goes to 1/2 inch VHS). This will all change
when HDTV or something better takes over, then all of our equipment
will be out-dated (like that will be anything new in this line).
Have had good luck with both Mediator and Willow, though we run at video
resolutions. Also done work with AVER products. Products getting cheaper all
the time.
