Hi, I have an A4000/040 with 3.00 ROMs and would like to hear from anyone on the advantage or otherwise of upgrading to 3.1. Is there much changed in the new version? Or is it more useful for those with 2.xx? What's probably more significant is: is it wise to spend money on a platform with a suspect future? I have had an Amiga since 1985 and like them but don't want to throw good money out. Also, what are peoples opinion on the Emplant emulator? Does MAC software run OK via this board? Thanks for any advice.

I can't vouch for the 3.1 upgrade. (Though I'm under the impression that 3.0->3.1 won't get you much more than a CD-ROM driver.) As for the EMPLANT, I can say that it's a rock-steady emulator, and it runs faster than many Quadras out there! Erik Flom

I guess uoy havn't used a real quadra computer, because many are now clock doubled.

I don't want to get into a battles of computers here. Let me clarify my previous statement: 'The EMPLANT, in my 40MHz A4000, performs better than an equivalently clocked 68040 Macintosh for math operations.' Obviously, with the PowerPC, and clock doublers, many Quadras will be faster! Erik Flom

A clock doubled 68040 chip? I didn't think such a thing was possible unless Motorola has been hiding something from us. As far as my Emplant's speed goes, Speedometer indicates it is as fast as a Quadra 840. The only thing that is really slower is the video and display tests even with my Spectrum card. I would imagine that if you used a 64-bit video card like the Piccolo or CyberVision then it would come very close to the video speeds as well. // John (Warp 4040 & Emplant Quadra 840) \X/ Mercury@ins.infonet.net

most of the quadras now are internally clock doubled quadra 630/perform 630 and a few others.

Rob, I have been using 3.1 for six months and feel it was a good investment. I recently upgraded my sisters A4000 to 3.1 and she is also happy with it. I believe that there is library file in this forum outlining the features of 3.1. Cheers, Marty ProActive Images Inc. "WE BECOME WHAT WE THINK ABOUT ALL DAY LONG" – RW EMERSON
