I'm new to this forum, and I'm pretty new to animation software and tech. What's a good "everything you wanted to know…" file to read and get wet?

Roland, Things change so fast around here that an faq file is hard to create. Your best bet is to review the section descriptions for each of the sections here, then tune in to what you find interesting.
