I have been on the phone to watcom trying to get ver9.5 and they say there is a new version of watcom c++ ver10 that has a new IDE and other features to make is more compatible with older versions. I would like to know if this new version works with IPAS3.

Hi Craig, << I would like to know if this new version works with IPAS3. >> IPAS3 does not support watcom 10. jonas[adesk]

Hello Hello, Jonas Wow, when I saw the introductory price for the Watcom 10 CD-ROM, I almost sent for it just so I could start programing IPAS (as soon as I got the SDK). Is Metaware High C now the only C compiler that will work with IPAS? Do I have to get Phar Laps Memory thing-a ma-bob? In other words, I would like to start to learn how to program IPAS. What do I need to have? Could a beginner in C programing create anything worthwhile in the first year? Etc. Etc. Etc. Thanks for saving me a couple 'a hundred bucks -David

<< Is Metaware High C now the only C compiler that will work with IPAS? Do I have to get Phar Laps Memory thing-a ma-bob? >> Watcom 9.5 is supported by the IPAS3 SDK as well as Metaware. The IPAS4 Read.Mewhich includes compiler support has not been released to the public. Watcom 10 support for IPAS4 has been a very big wishlist item by the developer community. I will be posting the IPAS4 Read.Me as soon as I can..

So how does one buy Watcom 9.5 these days, now that 10 is out?

Hi John, << So how does one buy Watcom 9.5 these days, now that 10 is out? >> Watcom, Onterio, was still making 9.5 available to developers of IPAS3 routines. jonas[adesk]

That's Ontario, I'm sure. 🙂 Do you have any idea of their pricing on this 9.5 version? I'm tempted to buy 10.0, but I'd like to get 9.5, too, in case I'm up late one night and find a compiler bug in Metaware.

Hi John, << That's Ontario, I'm sure. 🙂 >> Ooops.. << Do you have any idea of their pricing on this 9.5 version? I'm tempted to buy 10.0, but I'd like to get 9.5, too, in case I'm up late one night and find a compiler bug in Metaware. >> They seem very nice. Give them a call. jonas[adesk]

>>how to get Watcom 9.5… You have to go directly to Watcom. (They won't sell it thru a dealer). You have to explain that Watcom 10.0 will not work properly with 3DS IPAS. Depending on who you talk to, you may get an argument. If so, be persistent, referencing advice given on this forum as to the inability of the 10.0 debugger to work with IPAS. Eventually, they will sell you 9.5 with all the manuals ($500 or so, I think) and throw in 10.0 for free (CD version, no manuals) JKJ (been there, did that)

<< Watcom 10.0 will not work properly with 3DS IPAS >> … with 3DS3 and IPAS3.

So 10.0 is $250 or so, but 9.5 and 10.0 is $500. 🙂

Hi David, << Could a beginner in C programing create anything worthwhile in the first year? >> Sure.. I have seen many developers, who were not exposed to IPAS2, produce worthwhile code since the release of IPAS3. Certain aspects of the IPAS interface are easier to grasp by some, than others. I've seen developers concentrate on one of the letters of IPASBK. I feel that the scripting extensions are going to increase an IPAS programmers productivity. It has for me. Do you currently own a copy of Computer Graphics by vanDam and Foley? what about 3D Animations by Vince? Have you checked out the Graphic Gems code in software dev kits yet?.. all of these will give you a foundation and a direction..

One of the features the IPAS needs is the ability to be able to select specific vertices. Right now you can only select a complete objects. Not having this functionality forces me to create a 3D window from within the IPAS and create my own routines to select vertices, right? Will this be added to IPAS4?

Hi Alfonso, << Will this be added to IPAS4? >> I'm sorry but IPAS4 has not been released yet and I cannot discuss an unreleased product.
