Depends very much which SGI. Remember, they have the new R8000.

Yes this is true,
and the r8000 is horrifically fast in floating point calculations,
but is very slow in Interger operations, because it has to sacrifice
clock cycles to switch to interger operations.
90% of all computing tasks are interger based.
And the Dual pentium machine will ourperform even a r800 on heavy interger
based apps.
Read Byte mag's article on the r8000 and poor interger performance.
This is why the power PC 601 was poor performer in interger compared to the
pentium,
and why Motorola totally redid the design to improve interger performance
in the 604.
But you are right in regard to floating point ops, the r8000 has no
rival in that regard.
The t5 will address some of the problems with the r800 interger performance to.

But aren't we all look for faster rendering wich is as far as I know mostly
floating point math?

the actual rendering is floating point intensive,
but all the modeling , screen changes, and most of the program commands
are all interger, so it is getting to the floating point part , when interger
performance is slow, that can affect performance.
remember to, that the operating system, which controls al the programs calls,
is all interger as well.
floating point takes only about 5-7 % of all computing tasks.
