Are there any trade associations or organizations related to computer
animation, rendering, 3D Studio, etc?
If so, what are they, what do they do, and how can I contact them?

One of the best things to do would be to join or start a local User group. Let
us know where you are and we'll try to find the nearest active group.
The New England 3DS User Group, in Boston, has been a very good source of
contacts and jobs for it's members.
Join NAAUG as a start. I don't have my phone book, but if you post a message
in Section 14, you can get the number at Autodesk for Toby D'elia and he can
sign you up.

SIGGRAPH is probably the permeir computer graphics organization. The annual
conference is a MUST SEE for any serious animator.
