Although it may be possible to generate pfms, it definately isn't a good idea, there's actually enough info left out of the pfbs so that your pfms would turn out screwy. Although alot of people think fonts are generally harmless, if you start generating pfms without knowing what the math is behind the pfbs you could easily start really screwing up your windows environment. The sheer fact that in trying to generate pfms without hand tweeking them you will no doubt end up with problems in kerning and leading. You have to keep in mind that neither windows nor any word processing program is equipped to deal with bad font info. For the most part they will load but as soon as it hits a problem, it'll GPI or something of the like. The pfbs on the 3DS CD are so refined for 3DS that they could easily screw stuff up enough in Windows to cause you to have to reload everything. Between you and I, :-), I know of several people who have tried it and caused massive windows crashes that took days to recover. 😐 The plain and simple fact is that I designed the 3DS pfbs for Gary and company and in the end for the users of 3DS. I purposely hand created everyone specifically optimized for 3DS. I thought about making them more generic but the fact is that I don't really care about anyone using anything except for 3DS. 🙂
