#os/2 & Targa card
7 messages in this thread
I loaded os/2 warp on ny home computer last night, no problems (other
than having to track down an updated driver for my scsi card). 3DSR3
is up and running in foreground and background mode. Hopefully later
this weekend I'll bring home TSHELL, which is a text based shell for
os/2. Then I'll do some benchmarking.
One problem: I'me unable to get my Targa card running with 3ds. I
went into Vibrant config, set the render screen driver to vibrant,
selected targa, and ran the test screen. no problem there. When I
go the rest of the way into 3ds, and do a view image, I get: "Can't
allocate image buffer", and "init of driver failed".
I can dump .TGAs to the Targa outside of 3ds using TTSHOW. It appears
only to be 3ds which is having problems.
Anybody running os/2 with a Targa card?
Thanx, LAM
Larry,
The problem with the error "Cant allocate image buffer" and "Init
device Failed" is the you need to allocate extended memory to 3ds. Do
you have 3ds working in the background and foreground? Im having
trouble getting my background to render. When ever I swotch from
foreground to background it stops rendering. Please let me know what
your settings are so that I can get my background copy working.
To Gregg DAly
I am getting the same errors <<Cant allocate image buffer and Init device
Failed>> when running 3DS in OS2. How do I allocate extended memory to 3DS to
solve this problem as you mentioned in your message to Larry Minton on 11-26.
Remember, I am a novice.
Im using os/2 3.0 (WARP), Im not to sure if the same proceedure
applies to os/2 2.x, but this is what I did. If you right click on
the application icon a menu comes up. Click on settings. Next click
on sessions then click on dos settings. Then click ok. this will
bring up a list of dos settings.Set you EMS_MEMORY_LIMIT to 20192 or
higher, XMS_MEMORY_LIMIT to 16384 or higher, DOS_FILES to 50.
That should help, I will check me settings agian to make sure that
that is what I did.
Under the philosophy of beat on it until it works, I finally got the Targa card
up and running. I had turned off EMS memory (Frame=none) as I was pretty sure
3ds didn't need it. Turning that back on plus something (?) else I did got it
going. I brough home a program from work that saves as a text file all the DOS
settings. Once I get things stable, I'll run it and upload the results.
I have a ATI Graphics Ultra card, which os/2 sees as an 8514. The ability to
run a graphics program in the background is determined by whether the os/2
video driver supports it or not. Unfortunately, it appears the 8514 driver
doesn't support it. Fortunately, 3ds has a "null" driver, unfortunately I
still can't run a background session worth a darn either. More than half the
time it seems to load a project file, but never finishes rendering it. 'Cause
you can't see anything on the screen, who know's what's going on. Got a bit
frustrated over it all this weekend. Anyhow, try adding "/BGEXEC" to your
Device=…vsvga.sys line in config.sys. If your os/2 video driver supports
background execution while in graphics mode, that ought to turn it on.
Thanks, I look forward to seeing your results. Im running a ATI MACH32, and I
have to run my background or slave copy in vga mode to have it switch properly
from foreground to background.

Can you tell me more about this program. It sounds like something I have been
looking for and I would like to obtain it.
TIA
Peter.
