I agree with you there!
The Canon does seem to be a bit insubstantial looking. There's not a lot
of parts in the Canon, so it really doesn't need to be any bigger, and
it's actually pretty sturdy despite its look.

I have an old Panasonic that isn't ugly and it still works really well,
but I'm not going back to the old dot-matrix noise factor for anything but
multi-part stuff.

Yes, the new Studio does support the Epson Color Stylus. I'm using a beta
version now to do a review on the Epson and the Fargo Pro for AmigaWorld.
In a comparison between the HP 550/560, Canon 600 and the Epson, the HP
would probably finish last.
Last comment: Forget about the size and/or the design of the case…the
only thing that counts is the quality of the output.

I'd agree with that!
You might want to do a sidebar on the Canon BJC-4000 and the 600e though,
as the 4000 does a lot better text wise and holds it's own in the color
department, and I hear the 600e will do better in the color department and
be almost as fast as the 4000 at text.

If Fargo doesn't hurry up and get me a driver, I may just have to get a
4000. Unfortunately, reduced pages in AW holds down the number of
printers I can deal with in a single review.

I'm a bit surprised that Fargo hasn't gotten you the drivers yet though!
I thought the people have been using the Amiga drivers for a long time…
FWIW, I looked at the fargo and found that it was smack dab in the middle.
Printing is to expensive for the low end, and it doesn't quite cut it for
high end proofing either.

We're talkin' two different Fargo's here.
The first one (low res) (192 dpi) has both Fargo and Studio drivers. The
new hi-res Pro model (600×300) has been promising Amiga drivers for the
last couple of months, but so far, no show.
I reviewed the first one back in the May issue of AW.
BTW, color ink jet's aren't nearly as cheap to run as most people think.
But the Fargo, particularly in its original incarnation, would not quality
as a text printer either…price or quality-wise.

Yep, I knew we were talking about two different printers, but the Pro
model still is in the middle. I guess I'm just saying the fargo printers
don't fit into our scale of operation.
For example, our rough draft color printer is an IBM 4079 (~$3,000.00
360×360 color ink-jet printer), and while it doesn't have that true a
color representation, it's postscript allows us to see basic layouts.
Then when the designers are happy, it goes on to typesetting where they
check the layout and then print a "proof" on our IRIS printer (~30,000.00
color ink-jet printer only 300×300 res, but you should see the output!)
Then when it gets ok'd, it it goes to one of the presses. (4 or 6 color)
The Fargo's are just to low end to be of use, and the printing costs are
nowhere as cheap as the 4079. (especially when we need postscript!)

I know what they cost… 🙂 (I've owned 2 personally, and we have
several at work.) That's where the Canon's shine! Their driver
technology on the PC is not good however. (Wolf's drivers for the Amiga
work much better.)

I have a Fargo at home and love it as a personal printer. I am a
professional photographer so I have use of the Dye Sub capabilities that others
don't. At work we have an Epson color stylus as our proof printer (makes
fantastic color contact sheets from a PhotoCD or other digitized images). At
720 dpi it is incredible.
I agree with you that I wouldn ' I agree with you, I wouldn't recommend the
Fargo for the office but for home or small business use (at $499 now) it should
be considered. We have a Kodak dye sub printer for the office ($10,000) and
its materials cost the same per copy as the Primera's.
My only wish is that the cost of dye sub ribbons and paper would come down.
The output I am getting out of the Fargo is fantastic without even taking into
consideration its initial low cost.

You might mention, as a sidebar to your review, that the "Fargo Primera"
printer is now being offered under a different label "NU Design" at a price of
$499. I received their catalog (DTP Direct 800-643-0630) a couple of weeks
ago. Since many Amiga graphics programs have dye sub drivers for the printer
you don't need to upgrade to the the Dye Sub option, which only includes driver
software, a ribbon and 25 sheets of dye sub paper. Great price for the
original Primera.

Great to hear you're doing a Fargo Pro review (when???). It it as
sensitive about not using a switch box &/or long cable as the Fargo? Fargo
said they haven't finished the Aniga driver yet. What are you using for
driver?

Still awaiting Fargo driver. They are not licensing 3rd party developers,
such as Wolf, for the Pro unit. They've been telling us "two weeks" for
the last 6 weeks. We'll see……

I found an little article in the newsletter of the german 'Amiga Plus'.
There are two pictures printed with the Epson and Studio V2 hoho looks
really fine. But there is no price. I'll have to search in the
announcements. Studio V2 is selling here I think.
You test the Canon 600? The new one is the 4000. A test said that the ink
from Canon is a bit better than the ink from Epson. But the Epson has also
a good quality on standard copypaper(even at 720dpi).
Of course the outputquality counts but a beautyful design would be
welcome!

The new Studio V2 is now on sale in Germany. I don't know the retail
sources there, but why don't you leave a message for Wolf Faust at
100116,1070…he can tell you where to buy it and the cost.
I tested the Canon 600 in last May's Amiga World. To get the best quality
out of the Epson you must use their special paper. I find the resuolts on
plain copy paper to be poor to mediocre.
