Help, I just bought an IDE hard drive for my 386BB and I can't get things
working. I'm using the Super multi I/O card from Elite Microcomputers.
I have in the past used the BB floppy controller and the I/O cards
VGA/VESA and serial and parallel ports ok. But I can't get the IDE floppy
and hard drive controller to work. If you have this set up and it's
working can you give me your configuration. IE the BB jumper settings and
BB setup settings, IBM drive types ie A: and C:.
I have a dedicated 1.4 mb floppy drive for the IBM and am not sharing any
amiga drives. I tried J506, J601, J501 and J502 all removed. I have no
idea what J101's pipeline mode is so I left it alone. I tried numerous
configurations and have had no luck.
I assume that the floppy controller on the BB must be disabled if the I/O
cards floppy controller is enabled.
Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you have a seperate floppy dedicated for the BB then just
double-check to make sure everything is right such as pin 1 is connected
to the red line on the ribbon cable and power is being supplied to the
drive properly. Next go into the BB BIOS and select a 1.44MB drive for
drive A:. Connect your hard disk to the IDE controller and make sure all
is correct. The 386BB BIOS has an AUTO detect setting for hard disks just
in case you do not know your drive symmetry (sp?). I have not used the
Elite Super I/O card but I have used IDE controllers with no problem.

The floppy drive works ok via the BB floppy interface but when I try to
move it to the I/O IDE interface it fails. Are the cables that the BB
comes with and connects to the floppy standard IBM floppy drive cables. ie
they have a twist in them. Is this also true of the hard drive cables do
they need a twist or not?

The hard drive cable should NOT have a twist in them. The answer to
the floppy drive problem is I suspect NO. There should be cables that
came with your controller I would use those in place of the cables that
came with the BB. All systems that I have seen that have 2 drives always
had a floppy cable with a twist in it. I do not know if this is true for
single drive systems. I guess you'll have to experiment. Make sure that
you are telling the BB and Janus software that you are not sharing via
jumpers and software respectively.
