As of late I've seen some software packages for the Amiga that "Take over the
system". By this I mean that they can't be installed on the Workbench and run
as a task. The whole point of the Amiga was an open system (expansion) and open
software (allowing you to run word processing, paint, animations etc. etc..) At
the very least the program should run from the external drive and allow you to
access other programs on the internal. I've heard that some of the reasons have
to do with memory … we have some products that use almost all the 512K of the
Amiga and what we have decided to do is to optionally close the workbench ….
i.e. if you have additional memory we'll keep the workbench active. Other
reasons have to do with copy protection
… that issue has been dicussed already but needless to say we feel that copy
protection has no place on a professional multitasking computer. This doesn't
just apply to productivity and utility software … why shouldn't a user be
allowed to play an adventure game while their spreadsheet is printing? (or
their program is compiling). If the Amiga doesn't have open software … the
whole point of the multitasking will be lost and the computer will have lost a
real feature over other 68000 based systems. I want to stir up a little debate
here …. Lets hear it for "OPEN SYSTEMS AND OPEN SOFTWARE!!!"

Right on! Open design will be the key to Amiga success, methinks. Otherwise,
where's the advantage of spending twice as much for the Amiga instead of opting
for the ST? (Excluding applications that need the 4096 palette and stereo
sound, of course)
