Another question about hardware–thanks for the expert advice on modems!! I wonder if anyone has had experience with the Allegra 512k expander and if so, how compatible is it with existing software?? How does the upgrade to 2megs take place–do I have to swap chips myself?? <gasp>!. Any bugs with this unit so far?? Also, any word on the reliability and ease of installation of the Tic clock from Byte by Byte (if you are listening Byte by Byte, is this device shipping yet? any info on where in Mass I could pick one up?). What is your experience with this device?? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!! Mark

Mark, I called Byte by Byte a few days ago, and they said that Tic will start to ship Dec. 15th and they had large backorders on the product. George Glines

Mark, before you jump on Tic check out A TIME from Akron Systems Developement (ASD) in Beaumont, TX (409)833-2686. It plugs into the parrallel port & provided for a pass through for your printer thus not tying up anything for just the Clock/Cal combo. I will be receiving one any minute and I'll let you know how it is…Dave

I have had the Alegra board for about a month now. Software compatibility depends on how well the program was written. Most programs run with no trouble — Flight Simulator, Lattice C, the Macro Assembler, to name a few. If the program was sloppily written, you will have to run a pr pr program called FixHunk on the offending software (FixHunk is supplied with the board). This forces graphic data to be loaded into the lower 512K and will permanently fix the problem. This worked on TextCraft, for example, and all of my public domain programs. The only program it didn't fix was Balance of Power. Another utility supplied with the board will fix this. It is called MemGrab, and it fools the system into thinking that the upper 512K is full. THe only program that I haven't been able to run is the Transformer. I good product, which I highly reco recommend.
