#RGB encoding

I'm becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the composite output of my
wonderful Amiga….has anyone experimented with using an RGB encoder to make it
into NTSC? I realize encoders cost about $2K, but "zignal uber alles".
Asidely, AW states that the genlocker will output the overlayed signal
on both the composite AND the RGB….I would be truly surprised if that were
so–comp yes, RGB very doubtful.

Why do you doubt? Converting comp to RGB is not that expensive, unless of
course it is done right <grin>. It had better overlay onto the RGB, cuz that's
what most people are watching!
Come to think of it, we used a couple proto genlockers on Amazing stories,
and they indeed did overlay RGB. The signal was then sent to a large RGB video
projector.
I will be trying a Grass Valley encoder soon (hopefully). By the way, a lot
of people have told me there would be a big market for a $500-700 hi-quality
encoder. Could be done, but I don't have the cash to experiment right now.

There would absolutely be a market for a low-priced encoder. My company would
buy one immediately. When I took the rgb output to video, it really put the
composite output I had been using to shame. The Sci-Tech people told me they
will take the rgb, process it and then encode it within their unit before
sending out a new, improved composite out (as compared to what the Amiga sends
out now).
Rick, do you know if the CBM genlocker has its own encoder, or does it use
the internal one? — Mike
