I'm using a Maxum 2400. It's supposedly 100% Hayes compatible, from what
I've seen it is.
Like I said before, TAG-BBS registers the fact that the line is ringing
but doesn't send the 'ATA' command (at least I don't think so).
To test my modem I wrote the following OnLine! script:
When "RING" jump ANSWER
rwind
Label ANSWER
Reply "ATA|"

Sure enough when the line rings the modem answers. This proves (I think)that my modem works…right?
TAG-BBS seems to try to answer but then hangs up immeadiately (not due to
the S7 register which is set for 30 sec. wait time) and then registers a
'False Alarm' in the status window and resets…could it be that TAG-BBS is
sending a character after the 'ATA' command thus causing the modem to hang up?
I think I'll try changing the S3 register (carriage return code) to
another value to test this therory…<Sometimes an idea comes when you take the time to write it down!> Any other suggestions anyone?

Do you have line #6 hooked up from the modem to the Amiga? It carries
DSR and indicates the modem is "ready", and you should also have line # 8
hooked up showing Carrier Detect. Finally, doesn't the modem auto-answer
without the ATA by the setting of s0?

I'm sure that I have all the right lines connected (1-8,12,20,&22) and
yes it does answer if I set the S0 register to any nonzero value, but in the
example system configuration it states that auto-answer should be off (so as
to let the BBS decide when to pick up via 'ATA'; posible to allow the system
to reset between callers this way.)
one other thing:
Last night after having the modem on for about 3 hrs. I turned off my
computer and noticed that I could have almost fried an egg on my modem (my last
modem got hot, but not like this!) and I heard a slight transformer hum.
Do you think there is something wrong with my new modem?!
Please respond ASAP since I can still bring it back for an exchange.

The Modem should not pick up itself, so you DO have that right.
It sounds like it is not sending the Carrier detect back to the
computer. I have a Avatex 120hc And I am using the same string as
in the sample files. It works fine. I would test out the cable.
If it is picking up the phone and you have the modem set NOT TO
AUTO-ANSWER then it hangs up, sounds like Carrier detect, MAYBE?

I just tried it again and its NOT picking up the phone…I think my
original that my modem isn't receiving an 'ATA' command was correct.
Are you using the shareware version of TAG-BBS from DL4?
I like the prog. (except for the fact that I can't get it to work of
course) and would buy the latest update if I could only get this one to work.
Such a waste after customizing all the menus and help screens…

Yes, I am using the Version on here. I am the one who uploaded it!
That is why I cannot figure out what is happening. I got it to work,
And I am usually the one to have troubles.

Maybe you can help me, since you've apparently gotten TAG-BBS up and
running… I've followed the documentation in setting up my Tag_xxxx
files, and creating my directories. I moved the Tag_xxxx files and
the .Text and .Help files to the 's' and 'TAG_System:tag' (my choice)
directories, respectfully. Then, I booted up my new system (WB) disk
so that the proper 's' directory is assigned, and ran Generate. Every
time I run the Generate program, I get a Guru! I'm using 1.2, but
tried with 1.1 to the same effect. I've calculated disk storage, etc.,
but that doesn't seem to be the problem. I get the Guru as sson as
the Generate program prints its header and first title. Any ideas?
Anybody have similar problems? This is version 1.02, which I got from
DL4, by the way. I'd really like to try this program out, but………

Brent,
You must do a STACK 20000 just before you run the Generate command!
This sounds like what the problem is. Do the Stack command and all
will be fine.

P.S. I do the Stack 20000 and have NEVER had the generate command
die due to GURUS! Only my over use of disk space, and even then it
DID NOT GURU! It stated the fact that it had a mental problem and
suggested that it may or may not be due to lack of disk space!
Okay Doug, I'll give it a try. Now, any idea what setup string I
might use for a Signalman 1200 modem? I'm borrowing one from work
to test this out, and I can't find documentation. Thanks for the
Stack advice — too bad it's not mentioned in the docs… 🙂

Well, If it is Hayes Comp. it should use the same set up!
Make sure that THE MODEM IS ON BEFORE THE PROGRAM STARTS UP!
I did an experiment. The TAG software send the Setup string to the
modem only ONCE! If the modem is not turned on to receive this string
it WILL NOT WORK! Hope this might help somebody.

I have had many problems with TAG, but finally got it to work (sorta). After
setting up all the system files, getting them all generated, etc. I tried it
out from my C64 (less then 5 feet away). At first, I COULD NOT get it to
answer properly, using the default settings in the TAG_SYSTEM file. This was
using either a Hayes 300, or an Alpha Concord 300/1200 Hayes compat. After
fiddling with the setup for a while, and after consulting with someone who had
managed to get TAG running, I tried a new answer response. I substituted 'AT
H1 H1 A' for 'ATA'. This allowed TAG to answer at 300 baud. 300 baud only.
Following this twist, I managed to get TAG to answer at 1200 baud, with 'AT H1
A', but here also, 1200 baud only. Never both 300/1200. From these two
different setups, I can only conclude that the routine monitoring the incomming
'CONNECT' message is simply too time sensitive (takes a hardly any time for the
modem to process such comands). You have managed to get it to work, but I
suspect that only others, with modems having similar processing times, have got
their programs to work. Perhaps this will give you some help when trying to
explain the setup to new TAG users (keep up the good work!). I can only hope
the author will make a further upgrade to the code to fix this problem. Until
he does, I won't be sending him the $25 (would you pay for something you KNOW
doesn't work properly?)

Well, Let me state FOR THE RECORD. That I DID NOT, nor have ANY
connection, or even know the author. But I know of 4 people who
have set up and run the TAG SYSTEM without any problems.
So as far as i am concerned, there is nothing wrong with the
software. Out of the 4 people that I spoke to, there were 3
different modems. So I do not know what to tell you.
TO PEOPLE WRITTING ME E-MAIL:
Let me state again, I DID NOT WRITE THIS SOFTWARE, I HAVE NO
CONNECTION WITH THE AUTHOR! So DO NOT write me complaining about
this and that, I do not mind giving a hand to the people who just
wanted help from someone else who had gotten a program working,
I am talking about people leaving me nasty notes about this…
and that…. wont work, you should have fixed it before you uploaded
it. I am just a user of the Tag System, just like the rest of YOU!
Once more for all the dense people out there:
I DID NOT WRITE THIS SOFTWARE!!
If I sound upset, How would you like to have people jump down your
throat for a program that they say does not work and blame you for
a program that you did not write. not to mention take the time and
expense ($12.00 a hour) to answer these BOZOS!
AGAIN: I am not talking about the folks who just asked reasonable
questions, I am very simply talking of 1 or 2 A**HOLES!

No, the modem should never get that hot. It sounds like you have a
definite problem. Also, are you sure your modem's default speed is the same as
the terminal program's? And did you check the carrier detect line to make sure
that the cable is carrying it thru?

TAG-BBS registers that the phone is ringing, but it never sends the
'ATA' command. My modem works perfecto with OnLine!
The Maxum 2400 automatically adjusts its baud rate to the one used in
the 'AT' command string…flawlessly so far.
