I bought one of the first copies of PageSetter a pagelayout piece of software
from goldisk – this is to the Amiga what Pagemaker is to the Mac it is
excellent. i designed my ads for my mags with great ease but – no postscipt
interface for lasers yet – no rotating of text or graphics – very few fonts in
limited sizes aavailable at time of writing but this is an exzcellent beginning
– i am able to obtain copies at good discounts if you need one leave me a
message via easyplex
Stephen,
I too picked up PageSetter at WOC, where it was introduced. I think it is an
absolutely magnificent program, though never having used any other desktop
publishing programs, I dan't have much to compare it with.
You can do limited rotation of text (turning it upside down), by putting it
on the graphic screen and using "rotate x or rotate y" options.
As for fonts, they have indeed done the right thing. You need only go to the
WorkBench screen, bring up a CLI, and do an ASSIGN FONTS: DF1:whatever, where
whatever is a directory full of fonts. What this means is that you can use any
PD or commercial fonts you happen to have. There are some in the data libraries
here, and Classic Concepts Futureware of Vancouver BC offers about 13 or more
fonts on a disk for about 20 bucks. I have a font directory in DF2: along with
a lot of extra commands that I use a lot, and ASSIGN fonts to it in my
startup-sequence.
I have designed a neat looking disk label with PageSetter, and now have the
problem of how to attach it to a disk. I figure I have two choices. One is to
try to find the right sized labels (2.75 * 2.75), and the other is to print
them on ordinary paper and attach with rubber cement or something like it.
Any ideas? I don't want to use the rubber cement if it will do nasty things
to the disk or if it will be difficult to remove the labels.
Regards, Larry.
Hi Larry, You might check with a Macintosh <groan> dealer. The dealer here in
Spokane sells a package called "MyLabeler" (or words to that effect) which
includes pin feed continuous labels that fit 3 1/2 inch disks. Of course, he
also sells the pages of blank labels separately. I've been using them to label
my disks using a mask of 6 labels I've set up in Deluxe Paint. Works just fine
although the packages of labels are a bit expensive. I'm trying to see if the
label sheets are available direct from the paper company for a little less
money. The sheets of labels are 3-up…so each sheet holds 9 labels. Each
label is the same size as the ones that come packaged with boxes of disks.

P.S. There is a name and address printed in the to corner of the label sheets.
It is:
Williams & Macias Microcomputer Products
Spokane International Airport Buisness Park
P.O. Box 19206
Spokane, Wa. 99219
Thanks a million Rick! I will get hold of them.
This Page Setter is the neatest thing I've seen in a long time. I just made up
a letterhead for a friend using a digitized picture of her, some fancy font
(sapphire) lettering, and a double line border, all at the top of the page.
Then I took it into one of the fast printing places and had 100 sheets run off
on some fancy pastel paper. Looks good, was cheap, and will most certainly be
appreciated in a way that can't be matched by a "store bought" gift.
Regards, Larry.
Hi Larry,
What kind of printer have you been using with PageSetter? Since I've been
playing around with my copy, I've found at least two 1.2 printer drivers that
are a bit screwed up — they jump between successive RastPort dumps (when the
printers get reset). The problem printers I've found are the MPS_1000 and the
ImageWriterII. Out at the show they were using something that emulates an
Epson, and that looked fine. The HP LaserJet looked really promising here, but
at least the one we've got locally doesn't have enough memory for a large
bitmapped dump. Oh, well. I've got some Amiga software types looking at the
problem with the MPS_1000 driver, but I thought I'd ask and see if you're using
a trouble-free printer. -Dave
Hazy,
I have a Roland PR-1011, which is a Panasonic of some sort. Funny thing about
it is that I have always had a lot of trouble with it before now, but am using
the PageSetter disk just as it came from Gold Disk and have had no problems at
all. It is mostly Epson compatible, but other programs have had trouble giving
results.
Regards, Larry
Larry,
Want a Roland PR-1011 printfile? Designed one over the weekend using a
printer driver maker from the Software Distillery. Supports ALL text and
graphics functions (even set it up to turn on/off the slashed zero). The
program appears to work fairly well. Not super user friendly, but good enough
to set up a driver with any docs.
Ewan
Ewan, I have a Roland driver, but it seemed that each time I used a different
program, the driver would be "not quite the right one", and I would end up
fiddling with DIP switches and other drivers. If you have one that works, I
would be very interested, as would any other Roland (Panasonic) owners.
Is the driver maker from the Software Distillery PD? I bet a lot of folks would
be interested in that too.
Regards, Larry.
Larry,
I'll upload my driver, so you can test it out. I set it up to use the
factory set condition of the PR1011, so that there'd be no hassles. About the
printer driver maker, it's a 'borrowed' copy from a friend who shuttles back
and forth from here to Palm Springs every couple of months. This one has a
serial number on it, and he asked that it not be given away. I'd assume it
wasn't PD, but I'll ask.
Ewan
Hmmm.. you said "Software Distillery"? It isn't the "Software Supermarket"
thing is it?
About the driver…. Thanks!
Regards, Larry.
Not PD Larry, and not the greatest in the world. Had it, get it, HAD it! Not
worth $250.00 US. NOT PD!
BRI
Not ALL drivers though! Just sent my program back for refund.
Whatcha up to?>
Larry, I am working on getting the proper labels from TPUG. Bri
Since asking that question, I have found at least three answers to the problem.
I found out that Strider uses labels done on a Mac, and there are always the
"stick 'em in the Xerox" type. I made one up yesterday and wore it in my
membership badge to the PD party today, and got a lot of favourable comments.
Love that Page Setter!
Regards, Larry.
I think it would be appropriate to add that rotation of text and graphics CAN
be done for PageSetter in any Paint program that uses IFF and has these
capabilities — would've been nice to see the capability in PageSetter, but its
not totally necessary, as most folks have that capability somewhere else in
their system. As for the fonts, the PageSetter disk only comes with standard
C-A supplied fonts. But ANY Amiga standard format fonts will work just fine
with it. There are some PD fonts available here, there's the Zuma fonts and
other commercial collections available, and if all else fails Amiga OS V1.2
includes a font editor so you can create your own special fonts. -Dave
And of course if you have purchased "Defender of the Crow", it also includes a
fairly nice, if overly fancy font.
Moral of the story… ALWAYS, ALWAYS check all directories on all programs you
buy. There are often hidden treasures you didn't count on. <grin>
Regards, Larry.
Shanghai has a nice 5×7 proportional font too Larry. Looks neat on the
monitor!
Bri
Thanks Brian. If I pick that one up I'll grab the font. I have a feeling I will
be needing that hard drive soon just so I can access all the neat fonts.
Oh, and "exported" Deluxe Print clip art works great on Page Setter, which
means that there is finally a use for the DPrint disk.
Regards, Larry.
Hehe, BUT Larry, I have all them neat fonts on a Hard Disk, but PageSetter is
the ONLY program that allows me to use them all. Dpaint, Dpaint II, Aegis
Images, DPrint, GraphicCrap, and even the 1.2 Font Editor CANNOT access them
all. Most of the aboce (Above) crash if I try and choose or load a font.
NotePad is the closest to getting them all loaded.
Bri
Brian,
One way to do it in some of the programs you mentioned is to split up the
fonts into subdirectories, then use ASSIGN to get at them. A notable exception
is DPrint, which is, other than its inability to load other fonts, a piece of
garbage, so there is not much lost.
Regards, Larry.
