#A2000 Floppy Problems

I just installed a 2010 internal 3 1/2" floppy drive in my Amiga 2000, and
am having some serious problems with it. If anyone else has had similar
problems, I'd like to hear about it.
Basically, if I insert a disk that already has data, the system is able to
read a little of it– show a directory, run a program, etc.– but then, very
quickly, it displays "read/write error" message. Then, the disk is lost.
Whether I hit "Retry" or "Cancel", a disk corrupt message soon follows, and the
disk becomes unusable in any drive.
If I insert a new disk, with no data, and try to format it, I get an
"Initialization failed — no sector header — try a different disk."
Finally, if I run DiskDoctor on a disk as a result of the "Disk Corrupt"
message, it starts ok, but then produces a list of "Hard Errors" that generally
are on or around tracks 40-60. And, when done, it says the following: "Unable
to read disk type – formatting track zero;" "Unable to write to root –
formatting root track;" and "Cannot write root block – Sorry!"
So, frustrated, I brought the drive back to the dealer, got a new one,
installed it– same problems. Then, afraid perhaps it was in fact the 2000, I
figured I would try switching the cables– in other words, use my DF0: as DF1:,
see if that worked. Well, here's what happened when I did that:
DF0: still responded as DF0:, despite the fact that it was plugged in as
DF1:– okay, no problem, obviously the disks physically identify their logical
device number. The lights, however, lit up on the opposite of the active
disk– ok, also no prob, obviously the computer controls the lights separately
from the drives. BUT, and here's the confusing part, in this twisted, reverse
configuration, BOTH DRIVES WORKED PERFECTLY.
What is going on here?? I can think of no explanation for it, especially
this last part. If anyone can offer any assistance at all, or even just an
explanation, I would greatly appreciate it.

How are the jumpers set up on the floppies? And the jumper on the
circuit board that tells the Amiga you have a 2nd internal floppy? I belive
that particular jumper is labeled J301 (look in your A2000 addenda sheet).
The jumper is located on the motherboard, to the left (when viewed from
the front of the comptuer) of the power supply and to the right of the drive
cable where it plugs into the motherboard. It might be just hidden by the
drive cable itself (grey ribbon cable).

There's also a jumper block on the underside of the floppy drive that must be
set correctly for it to work.

The J301 jumper is definitely installed. As for the jumpers on the
floppies, well, gee, how I wish some information on them was included in the
installation guide! Here's what I can tell you: comparing the factoryinstalled
DF0: to the dealer-supplied DF1:, only two jumpers are different. Looking from
the back (plug end) of the drive, and assuming the tw "columns" are numbered
from left-to-right, starting at zero, then column 8 (last one) has a jumper on
DF0:, and column 7 has none, while on DF1:, column 7 has the jumper, and 8 has
none. Also, in DF0:, column 5 is jumpered, accross both rows of the column.
However, on DF1:, a jumper crosses columns 5 & 6, accross the bottom (closer to
plug) row. Can you tell me if this is correct-and, if not, what is? I'd
certainly be glad to hear that this is relatively easy to fix!

I don't know which jumper goes where, but I do know they have to be set
up right. Go on down to your dealer's and look at his setup and/or have the
tech at your dealer's (he does have a service tech…right?) take a look at the
drive. He should have some information for setting the jumpers.

Bill, I don't know– what is a terminator, and how do I identify it?

There is usually an IC socket that has a 'funny' looking IC installed
in it. The 'IC' will usually be either white or glossy black. In some of the
newer drives it will look like a thin IC mounted on edge with pins only on the
one edge. The edge mounted variety are also often red in color. The problem
is that I can't tell you for sure how to identify the terminator pack but I can
assure you that many systems will not operate if more than one drive has the
terminator installed (that is dasiy chained drives). If you are familiar with
IC numbering schemes then that would be the first clue since the number will
seem strange. 73, bill
