Is it me, or is there some trick to getting ASDG's Recoverable RAM Disk to work
with my Amiga 2000 with 3MB and a 20MB hard drive? The device mounts, but
without all the files that were in it before reset. What's the story? Any and
all help appreciated.

Roger, Mount VD0: must be the first command in your startup-sequence, followed
by dir >nil: VD0:. That's what I use, and the RRD has worked fine on my 2000
with 3Mb, A2090, and 40Mb HD. <Glenn
Roger, there have been a few solutions here – but the one that Perry recommends
and that I use with no problems is to have run system/SlowMemLast as the very
first thing in your startupsequence (note: even before mount vd0:). Try it and
let me know if you still have problems with the RRD recovering.

Arrrrrgggghhhh!!!! Exactly the wrong thing to do Marlene! Running SlowMemLast
at all will seriously degrade the recoverability of ram disk. This is because
the operating system will smush the 512K of slow fast ram every time it comes
up. Since the rrd uses the top most memory first (and slowmemlast puts the slow
memory at the end of the memory chain) the rrd will then use the slow memory
FIRST and not get recovered.
The solution here is to have CBM hurry up with 1.3 which I understand will not
smush the slow fast ram on resets.
Who told you that anyway?

You did, and my RRD always recovers. Before I put that in it never recovered.

With a 'plain ole 1 Meg' A2000, I had to change bufMemType from 5 to 3
and then RRD worked fine. With it set at 5, it did get 'smushed' on
warm-start.

quiet implication that the ASDG/RRD would work with
any memory. (I had an old COMSPEC memory expansion
that had to be upgraded/modified to support your RRD)

Well! I'm hearing more and more reports about problems
with the ASDG/RRD: From local gossip, to electronic media(AMNEWS)
and now AMIGAFORUM message threads.

One opinion has it that the ASDG/RRD is only 100% with ASDG/RAM!

Apart from the occasional problem of lost files after
a warm restart the only solid problem I've encountered
is losing an icon moved onto the workbench screen, out of
VD0: This I attributed to some quirk of AMIGADOS; I live
with it since I find the RRD worthwhile!

However there is a more fundamental issue of some people
not being able to use your RRD at all, and they don't know why!

There is such a thing as marketing integrity! Whilst I realize
your 2meg RRD is public domain; you 8meg is not. If I can't
get your public domain RRD to work I will think twice about
buying your 8meg version (something I am considering).

When someone turns to this forum for help I would expect the
vendor/manufacturer/author to be one of the first; not the
last; and not full of arrogant diatribe!

(fixed in next release is for the big guys who can afford to
make their customers wait! criticizing another users comments
on what worked for them and just might work for someone else
reflects badly on ASDG!)

To be blunt, Perry, less of the 'what won't work'
and more of 'what could work or should work'

To have a Recoverable Ram Drive obviously requires that the RAM being
used NOT get cleared during a warm-start. Since each manufacturer has it's own
way of handling a reset, how can you possibly blame ASDG for what happens when
you warm-start a machine? If the board manufacturer holds off refresh or
automatically clears the memory on reset, that's not Perry's fault. And in
those cases…can you show me any program that will recover that cleared
memory?
I think Perry (or ASDG…whatever) did the Amiga community a service by
releasing the 2 Meg version of RRD for all to use. The software does work as
long as the hardware works, I don't think you can ask any more than that.

Michael, the RRD works fine with my insider, my friends AMEGA, another friends
B2000… the 2 meg pd version. I think you need to think a little bit about
what you're saying. When a "few" of "many" ram expansions don't work, where is
the fault likely to lie? Personally, I have a high degree of confidence in the
RRD. And Perry. –Ben–
